Is Leeds Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

Leeds is generally a safe city for solo female travelers. Its crime rate is below the UK's national average and is less than other major cities. The public transportation is reliable, people are friendly, and there are many safe tourist spots to visit. Nonetheless, it's still important to use common sense and take usual travel precautions, especially at night in less populated areas.

How safe is Leeds?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Moderate

Leeds can generally be safe at night especially in well-lit and busier areas. However, it is advisable to stay vigilant and aware of your surroundings. Some areas may be less safe than others, especially quiet and less populated areas. Public transportation and licensed taxis are readily available for safer means of night time travel. Like anywhere in the world, it's best to avoid walking alone late at night. Instead, go with a group if you can, stay in well-traveled areas, and always let someone know where you're going.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Safe

Leeds provides a well-managed public transportation system. This consists of buses, trains, and taxis, which are generally safe and reliable. Most of the operators prioritize passenger security and have implemented surveillance systems and regular patrols to ensure safety. Night buses are available, but like any city, it's wise to stay aware of your surroundings, especially during quieter hours. However, incidents are not common and many solo female travelers have had positive experiences traveling around Leeds using public transportation.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Low

Leeds is generally a safe city for solo female travelers. Street harassment is not a common occurrence, and while it can occasionally happen as it could anywhere, most locals are respectful and courteous. It is always recommended, however, to stay alert and take typical travel precautions, especially during late hours and in less crowded areas.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Low

Petty crimes in Leeds do exist as they do in any city, but it's relatively uncommon. Leeds is generally safe but you should still exercise common precautions such as not leaving your belongings unattended, and being vigilant especially when in crowded areas or at night.

Is Leeds worth visiting?

Solo travel

Stayed in the city centre area, so everything is just convenient! Felt safe 100%! Was walking back to my hotel at about 2am and the streets were silent but the city lights were still on, I guess that the choice of hostel/hotel in the city centre helped with that :) You can go anywhere by just walking, they have a lot of stores, so I was mainly shopping for myself + souvenirs :)

Overall I think Leeds is a very safe city. Some parts of the suburbs are a bit rough but the city centre feels very safe. There are lots of streetlights in the centre and I've never had a problem walking home in the dark.

North Leeds especially is very suburban and safe, full of families and 25-30yo professionals. Headingley and Burley are more studenty so arguably less safe from a break-in potential, but generally absolutely fine. Harehills is known as the roughest area of Leeds and is definitely the least safe.

About me

I am a single solo traveller and host. I love meeting new people of all genders , ages, backgrounds and orientations. I have been solo travelling for many years and want to use social media to arrange more face to face encounters with other travellers and locals. I favour "slow travel" that allows me to really get to know the places I travel to. I especially enjoy the countryside, plants, history, food, fabrics, music and everything colourful. The places that I am thinking about visiting in the next few years are Italy, Portugal, Ethiopia and New Zealand. I have visited Italy several times before and I love it so much. I have been learning Italian and want to speak the language when I next go. I live in Leeds,England and I'm happy to host fellow travelling ladies.

About Me

Hi there! I'm Andy, 28 years old and give in way too easy to my spontaneous ideas. That's how I end up traveling solo for various things, including tattoos and now festivals 😅 And although I love solo traveling, sometimes I wish to get to know people at my destinations - that's why I'm here now. I love plants, animals and live music - mostly metal core. Can't wait to meet you! 😊
