Is Hurghada safe for solo female travelers?

How safe is Hurghada?

Safety at night:Moderate

Hurghada presents a relatively moderate environment for solo female travelers at night. Like many tourist destinations, most populated areas and hotel districts are generally safe and well patrolled. Public transport is reliable and can be used. However, it is always advisable to steer clear of less crowded areas and unknown neighborhoods at night. Predominantly, the locals are friendly and respectful but use the same precautions as you would do in your home city with regard to harassment or pickpocketing.

Public transportation:Moderate

Public transport in Hurghada consists mainly of minibuses and taxis. While generally safe during the day, utmost caution to personal space and belongings should be maintained. Minibuses can get very crowded, and language barrier might be a factor. Opting for licensed taxis is recommended, although fare negotiation is often required. Taxis may also take longer routes to charge more, so awareness of your route is beneficial. Uber is available in Hurghada and may be a safer, more comfortable option.

Street harassment:Moderate

In Hurghada, the street harassment you may encounter, although not consistently severe, does exist. It commonly manifests as unsolicited attention from men, such as unwarranted compliments, persistent offers to sell goods or services, and constant insistence for conversation or company. It is important to practice good judgement and firm communication. However, the level of street harassment can vary from person to person and it is not everyone's experience.

Petty crimes:Low

Hurghada is generally safe for tourists, including solo female travelers. Petty crimes such as pickpocketing or purse snatching do occur, but they are not as prevalent as in other regions. However, always remain alert, particularly in crowded areas. It is essential to practice usual safety protocols like not flashing valuables in public. Keep belongings secure and be vigilant of your surroundings.

Tap water:Unsafe

While the tap water in Hurghada is treated and should be safe to drink, it's generally recommended to stick to bottled water. The tap water in certain areas may have a high level of chlorine, which can cause stomach upsets for those unaccustomed to it. In addition, local bacteria in the water can also cause digestive problems for tourists.

Solo travel experience

It's a very safe place full of tourists. Food is good. But the shop vendors are very arrogant and if you don't need to buy anything just don't approach them. All beaches are private. It's nice city but small.

Group travel experience

I was with a friend at an all-inclusive resort in Hurghada and we didn't encounter any dangerous situations - but we decided not to venture outside the hotel complex. There, we felt safe and comfortable. The only problem was that when we tried to walk around the tourist shops, we returned after 5 minutes straight to our hotel - not due to safety concerns, but because of the pushiness of the shopkeepers.

Solo travel experience

I found safety to be varying, more safe in the controlled areas where there is security at entrance gates like senzo mall, city centre mall and the marina. Elsewhere, I did not feel particularly safe, especially around sheraton road, the local tourist shops and sellers can be overly aggressive trying to get your attention. Also, alway ALWAYS USE UBER! Please trust me, this is the safest way for a lone female, of course nothing is 100%, even in uber the driver has argued trying to extort cash from me when I already paid via app. This is a known occurrence, I always show the driver my payment and trip details on my screen before I get in the car and make sure they understand i have already paid and will not pay more cash.

Solo travel experience

I went on my first solo trip to Hurghada. I felt absolutely safe the whole time. The coral reef there is amazing for snorkeling. Fantastic entertainment both during the day and in the evening, the best I have experienced anywhere abroad. In addition, the airport is literally 10-15 minutes away, so the transfer time is very short.
