Is Alexandria safe for solo female travelers?

Alexandria is generally safe for solo female travelers. It has well-policed tourist areas and locals tend to be friendly and helpful in most cases. However, it's still important to remain cautious, especially at night as you would in any other city. Some women report occasional instances of verbal harassment, but it's typically not physical. It's recommended to dress modestly respecting local customs to avoid unwanted attention. Always take reputable transportation options and avoid isolated areas.

How safe is Alexandria?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Moderate

Alexandria has a fairly safe night scene. Well-populated areas like tourist spots, restaurants, and markets are generally secure, thanks to a regular police presence. However, like in any city, there are areas where it's advisable not to walk alone at night. It's best to avoid poorly-lit and desolate areas. Use of common sense and staying aware of your surroundings goes a long way toward ensuring your safety.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Moderate

Public transportation in Alexandria is moderately safe, but it can be a bit challenging especially for solo female travelers. Buses and trams are often crowded, which can lead to uncomfortable situations. Be prepared for stares and attention as foreign women can be an object of curiosity. Always keep an eye on your belongings to prevent theft. Taxis or Uber are widely available and safer, but always make sure the driver starts the meter to avoid overcharging. Understanding basic Arabic will be useful as well as not all drivers speak English.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:High

Street harassment is significant in Alexandria. As a solo female traveler, you might often deal with catcalls, unsolicited comments, or stares that can sometimes become uncomfortable. Remember to dress modestly and avoid taking empty streets or late-night trips alone. You may also want to learn local phrases to stand up for yourself when needed. Despite this, many female travelers have found ways to navigate and thoroughly enjoy their experience in Alexandria.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Moderate

Alexandria generally experiences moderate risk in relation to petty crimes. These might include pickpocketing or bag-snatching incidences, mostly in crowded places, such as markets and tourist spots. As a solo female traveler, it's important to be cautious of your belongings at all times, keep essential items close to you, and avoid flaunting expensive items in public. Be extra vigilant at transportation hubs like bus stations and airports, as these areas can be magnets for petty criminals.
Tap water:

Tap water:Unsafe

While the tap water in Alexandria, is technically treated and should be safe to drink, many residents and travelers report issues such as stomach upset after consuming it. As it's not consistently reliable, it's recommended to stick with bottled water for drinking and brushing your teeth when in doubt. Also, remember to avoid ice in your drinks as it may have been made with tap water.

Solo travel experience

Went during the overthrow of the Muslim Brotherhood (unsure if it was 12โ€™ or 13โ€™) nonetheless I was not a fan. I am tan Latina and I found myself feeling unwelcomed in many circumstances. I recall my white roommate encouraging me to approach the natives while I was out and about on my own. I did just that and was met with many unkind faces. There were so many instances where the natives were simply awful i.e. unkind. I am not familiar with the climate of today โ€” i.e. whether they continue to be close-minded, ignorant, colorist, and racist as POCs (which baffles me). But I have always empathized to many of my Arabic language exchange partners that I would not return.

Solo travel experience

The city of Alexandria was a very beautiful city with a lot of fun, excitement, and many special places to visit and enjoy the beach, especially at night. It is a very charming city, as well as the people in it.
