The area is well-lit, particularly in downtown, and there are generally people around even late into the night. Nevertheless, like any location, there may be certain areas that are less safe than others. As long as you stay primarily in well-traveled and well-lit areas, you should be perfectly safe.

The city has many different areas that vary greatly in atmosphere. Down on the south side it's generally quite peaceful in the neighborhoods and businesses. Same for the West Side. The North Side sees the effects of the homeless problem in this city. Their population is quite high downtown and on the North section of 13th street. However I've personally never had any issues with any of them, they're just struggling a lot which does result in some higher crime rates. I think the danger in this city typically stems from the higher population of conservative men. This province is sometimes referred to as "The Texas of Canada" so maybe you can see where I'm going with that. I hear stories of men in their big trucks following young girls at night. But it's certainly worse in other places, and if you know where you're going you can get from point A to point B very safely. I've never experienced anything of the sort, and I go out late all the time.
