Alma is a small town that is populated by young people because of the college there. People can tend to seem scary if you are used to actual scary people, but I've never had any issues living there for three years and walking long after dark. I don't think it's possible to get into trouble because people will come out of their home and help the first person in need. It truly is a great area and I've never felt safer no matter where in France than I do here.
