The southern part of Mumbai is very safe for tourists. Colaba has lots of hotels, cafes and restaurants. Locals are friendly and helpful, but there will also be people asking for money, so it's good to learn how to deal with that. Some men will be overly "helpful", in my experience it's best to be friendly but assertive when you decline their assistance.
