Things to do: I volunteered at Mother Teresa House while I was there. Incredible experience. Food: The street food was amazing. So good and cheap. I never got sick from it. Some sit down street places have real dishes. Ask for paper plates. Safety: I felt safe but was never out past 8pm by myself. When we went on bus to volunteer was with groups locals were so helpful telling us our stop was next. They are used to volunteers there. Uber very unreliable. Would accept your request but not show up if short trip ie small fare. Dress apprpropruate or you may get attention you don't want. Accommodation: Affordable places to stay on Suder street. Busy area with many places to eat and little shops. I stayed at Baptist Missionary Society guesthouse. Very cheap private and shared rooms. Meals served onsite. Gated with security to let guests in.

Kolkata was definitely the worst place I have been in my life. Accommodation is much more expensive if you want to find something fairly decent, and I had trouble finding good places to eat compared to the rest of India.
Posted: October 17, 2023I went to Kolkata for 3 days and had a great time. The traffic and noise were crazy. The city has many wonderful sights and flavors to experience. Besides regular tourist spots such as the Victoria Memorial, Howrah Bridge, etc, I loved visiting the potter's colony called Kumartuli and the Jorasanko Thakurbari museum. The food in Kolkata was a real pleasure.
