I haven't had too much bad experience, but ofc there is some city parts and transport vehicles which are not good. The 4-6 Tram, Keleti pu, Hős street is a little bit worrysome. Some homeless people are agressive, and nearby areas of Blaha Lujza tér have drug addicted people. There is a lot of hobos at Nyugati pu. But I know plenty of safe places as well. I only met drunkards and loud people, I was never robbed or touched. Of course there is some man, who follows women for a bit, but personally I never experienced dangerous problems. (Only the HÉV. If you want to travel nearby of Budapest, choose anything but not the HÉV!!!!)

Budapest is generally safe, but keep an eye on your belongings and be cautious with strangers. Some taxis, restaurants or services may overcharge tourists. Stay aware, polite and mindful, and you’ll enjoy the city safely.

Budapest is a safe city overall. I have lived here my entire life, I move around the city day and night alone as a woman without issues. As in most big cities, it’s good to pay attention to bags and pockets in crowded places (especially in tourist areas).
Posted: September 1, 2025I'd say Budapest is very safe compering to other cities. I travel by public transport everyday and there is no problem with it for me. Sometimes like once in a month I hear some yelling between usually gipsy couples or friends. But it still doesn't mean it's unsafe! Very good! I'm generally careful with thefts and potential bad people, but they are anywhere in the world, and here at a very low percentage in my experience.

in the city center there may be sone shady looking people and some may bother you verbally but it is not so common. there are some areas which are not the safest but those are mainly outside of the city center where big block houses are. there is a hill Mecsek and that area is safe almost all of the time. i live around there and i could walk there even in the night unbothered.

It was my first solo trip, and even i was a bit exceptical about how good it was going to be, last day i cried and i was wondering if all solo trip could be as good as that first one. I choose this city as my first solo trip because it was europe, it whats a short trip and the people i knew that have already been there told me it was safe and easy to move without knowing the native language. And that was it, everyone knew english and it was so easy enjoing the city by myself. 100% recomended to start traveling solo.
