Compared to other big cities, Budapest is safe. I often go home alone after midnight, and it’s very rare that I feel in danger. There are some areas that are worth avoiding, but based on my experience, Budapest can be considered a safe city.

Like every other city, Debrecen also has its rougher, more run-down neighborhoods. Fortunately, these areas make up only a small part of the city, and even they are generally considered safe during the day. At night, I would avoid them when alone, but elsewhere in Debrecen I feel perfectly safe walking alone even in the early hours of the morning.

I like this city because it’s really safe. I’ve never had any accident concerning my security, even if I walk at night and not in the city centre. The only area that I would suggest to avoid is the 8th district, but even there homeless people are quite kind

I would say Hungary is safe for women. In Budapest the centre districts are usually crowded after dark so you are never alone and there are a lot of surveillance cameras. There are a few neighborhoods that people say are dangerous, but I lived in the most dangerous and never happened anything bad with me. The other smaller cities in Hungary are absolutely safe.
Posted: May 13, 2025The safety depends on the area. The Buda side (the hilly side with more green area, the "rich" part) is safer if we talk about strangers on the streets or on the public transport. But the streets are more empty during the night so if something happens, no one will see or help. The Pest side, the city centre is more crowded even in the middle of the night. But strangers, drunk people and homeless people are everywhere.
