Fairly safe, a lot of drunk people and mad homeless people, but they usually dont harm you in any way. Im not sure if i even experienced any physical harassment on the streets. So i would say pretty safe, but dont be surprised if you hear drunk shoutings, singing, etc...
Posted: May 9, 2025It’s a pretty safe city overall, the only problem are drunk and homeless people and addicts that usually live around big metro stations. It can be scary, especially if you’re alone at night, but at the same time no one has ever tried to approach me or talk to me. There are often inspectors on buses and metro stations, who oversee the safety, and based on my experience homeless people usually just want to be left alone

Like in every city it depends on which part are you at, the outer, more abandoned parts are not recommended to be wandered around alone in the dark but I feel safe in the inner city with lots of public places and lights, there usually aren’t many creeps on the streets there. I keep a paper spary with me though because it gives me a sense of extra safety and sadly that’s normal now everywhere for a woman.
Posted: May 5, 2025It's a safe place for girls, more than Budapest, for example. I never heard that someone experienced something bad here. However, Nagyallomas, which is the train station, is not safe at night. It is full of drunk people.

I would say Budapest is basically safe, specially when you compare it with other places globally. There are some districts where you need to be more cautious and in areas where are many tourists pickpockets are present. But altogether I believe there's no serious reason to be worried.

It is safe during day the comynication and city itself ,but during night it’s better to stay in the city centre where there’s always more people espevialy when your a lady traveling alone or just take extra care of tourself.

IMO it’s pretty safe. Regarding racism (I am Asian) — Hungarian people are chill, but some may be rude. But foreigners are worse. I only heard racist slurs coming from the tourists. Thankfully no one assaulted me physically, but I felt bad about their words :(

Budapest overall if you stay in the central areas. I think that if you stay away from the clearly more dangerous districts (8th, 18th, 19th, 20th, 21st) than the city is pretty safe compared to other big european cities. Unfortunately men do live here so being cat called or stared at is inevitable but the cases of actual harassment or rape is pretty low. Pickpockets mostly target busy areas and tourists but if you are aware of your things and take a few precautions it is pretty easy to avoid. I would say public transport is diabolical but when it comes to safety it’s the same as the streets walking. Men might stare but most of the times they don’t actually take action. In general if you didn’t pick a fight they will avoid you. The biggest worry in my opinion is spiking in clubs. Both locals and foreigners participate in roofieing drinks, so be aware of that!
Posted: April 27, 2025It's very much depends on the area you're in. You can see homeless and strange people almost everywhere, but because of the big crowds they won't be a threat. At daylight I wouldn't say you have to worry about anything, but always be careful. The night life is pretty ok too, there are some areas where I wouldn't recommend going alone, but in a group it also shouldn't be a problem. You may get stopped and asked for money, you may witness loud and drunk people, I usually don't acknowledge them. In overall I'd say it's safe in Budapest but always be careful!

Budapest is overall a safe city, but i don’t recommend to walk alone after sunset, because many people can verbally harass you, especially the drunk ones. You have to be careful with pickpockets. But if you’re walking with someone than it’s totally safe mostly all day.

Loved Budapest. Great food, beautiful architecture, would wander the streets until I was too cold and go into the nearest bath to warm up. Affordable, easy public transit. Felt safe everywhere I went.

I felt very safe in Budapest, even when walking at night. I recommend visiting Fisherman’s Bastion, Széchenyi Baths, and taking a Danube river cruise. Skip overpriced tourist restaurants in Váci Street. Try local food at the Great Market Hall or eat goulash at a traditional Hungarian bistro. I stayed in District VII (Jewish Quarter), which was lively and close to everything. My budget was around €50–€70 per day, including meals, transport, and attractions. Public transport is easy and reliable—I used trams and metros with a daily pass. My itinerary included Buda Castle, St. Stephen’s Basilica, ruin bars, and the thermal baths. Overall, it was a beautiful and affordable trip!

Hello! I’m an Italian 🇮🇹 Erasmus student currently studying in Budapest, Hungary. I lived in Verona for a few years and it’s a lovely city to visit, good food, people, and many little streets and secrets to discover. I’m studying languages (English and Russian) for teaching, because I love working with kids and students! I’m a crafty person, I love discovering new music, reading classics and travelling. I’m a shy person, but if I feel comfortable I will never shut up. I’m always open to meet new people and exchange interests, cultures, and fun facts about languages! 🥰
