It’s very safe in general. It is a small city and public transport is usually safe and available. I have walked at night so many times and it was a safe experience for me. But from some international students I have heard cases of racism.

Like every other city, Debrecen also has its rougher, more run-down neighborhoods. Fortunately, these areas make up only a small part of the city, and even they are generally considered safe during the day. At night, I would avoid them when alone, but elsewhere in Debrecen I feel perfectly safe walking alone even in the early hours of the morning.
Posted: May 20, 2025It's a safe place for girls, more than Budapest, for example. I never heard that someone experienced something bad here. However, Nagyallomas, which is the train station, is not safe at night. It is full of drunk people.

There is a lots of hospital and police stadion. You can walk alone at night without worring about robbers. Some of the people are so kind and helpful. It's easy to navigate the city. There are taxis and bus, so you can use public transport.

I was in Debrecen, Hungary for a volunteer I did. I stayed about 6 months and the truth gave me time to know how people are, culture, customs, meals, etc. The truth is that the experience was quite improvable, the organization that "hired me" for volunteering was a disaster. I had difficult times but I also had a good time (outside the volunteer hours). Together with other volunteers we met Budapest, Tokaj, and other parts of Hungary. Sincerely, the Hungarian diet is bad, they eat everything with fat and that, but they explained that it was part of their history. People are, I don't know how to say it, something reluctant to foreigners in Debrecen. I mean, they are nice and such, but hey, you don't always meet kind people. And it is true that there are but not so much.
