Oulu is overall a peaceful city and safe for solo female travelers. locals are friendly and willing to help if needed. no pickpockets at all. some areas are safer than others. you can feel comfortable exploring Oulu on your own.
Posted: January 20, 2025Oulu is a safe city. Recently we have had crimes committed against black people though. Some people here don’t like foreigners but it’s not common for them to attack foreigners or people who aren’t white. Only recently some kids have taken more serious actions about their feelings but i would say that only made Oulu safer. Now we have more security in shopping malls where the attacks happened.

It's probably one of the safest places I've been to. I have no problem going out at 3 am. I have heard some complaints but mayeb one or two? And those were also like 2 years ago and another thing a year ago. So it's generally pretty safe!

Oulu is a very safe city to visit, most than any other place that I have visited so far. Finnish people tend to be quiet and respectful. In here, is a mix of countryside and big city (for Finnish standards). There is a big variety of culture due to the university bringing international students and staffs. In general the biggest issue is with stolen bikes, mainly performed by drunk people to bike back home.
Posted: July 1, 2024Very safe small city, I have often walked home from nightclubs and never had other than pleasant encounters with other nocturnal creatures. :-) obviously normal precautions should be taken so never leave your drink unattended etc. Public transportation is safe but some taxi companies are more reliable than others, I prefer Otaxi.
