How safe is Toronto?

It’s the safest place for women. I go out alone at night all the time, and have never once felt unsafe. Men here don’t really bother women in general, in my experience I don’t get approached on the street nearly as often as in other countries (like the US), and I’ve lived in Toronto for over 10 years.

It's not that safe unfortunatly. When it's really dark and late theres a lot of homeless and that got me feeling unsafe. I was in Toronto and i was walking late with friends and we walked past homeless some were talking or whispering something to us. That was really terrifying.

It really depends on what area you are in but the biggest threat or more so just uncomfortableness is on public transit late at night as there is a lot of unsheltered people during these times. If you are alone, I would just say to be cautious about your surroundings at all times

Toronto has a big homelessness and drug problem that occasionally causes these people to lash out at strangers. I feel relatively safe as I am a local and know my way around, but this could be unsettling for travellers. Pickpocketing is not an issue, neither is fearing for your kidnap or murder. Robbery not so much either. However you may be harassed / yelled at or minorly assaulted (this has happened to me and all of my friends at least once). Do not look people who seem to be acting strange in the eye and just walk past / stay to yourself. Most of the time you will be fine.

Toronto is pretty safe if you know which area you’re in. Certain areas are worse than others. I go to lots of concerts around Toronto and I always feel safe going there, at venue and coming home.

I lived there for 2 months and even downtown was okay in terms of safety. There were a lot of homeless people and many people were smoking, which was a bit scary. As a woman, you shouldn't be out and about alone. I often wore headphones so that people wouldn't talk to me. Nevertheless, I found even downtown rather unproblematic. I would consider Vancouver worse. It's more of a business city and therefore the "bad places" are minimized unless you challenge yourself and go into dark alleys at 3am...

toronto does not feel as safe as it once did. people seem on edge and incidents have been increasing. Although it is still generally safe, it is important to be careful and know which areas are not as great.

I would say it’s pretty safe while it’s bright outside, but as soon as it’s dark specially on summer and downtown it can be pretty unsafe. Because drugs/weed is legal here, a lot of crazy people in downtown.

I live in the heart of the city and it’s wonderfully safe. I work often into the night and I wouldn’t hesitate to walk home. There’s always so many people around and the few hiccups are just that. There are many sketchy looking people around but they generally keep to themselves.

Toronto is safer depending on which part of it you are in. Walking alone anywhere in the world is a little worrisome, but in Toronto, it's not that bad. There are just a lot of people who don't really seem to care and won't hurt you. I do recommend trying and having someone with you when walking long distances, and when navigating public transit, 2 brains are better than 1!

Is Toronto worth visiting?

Travel rating

4 /5

Solo travel

Toronto has improved tremendously over the last years! The food scene and club scene have both expended with nice, trendy and upscale spots to rediscover. As for safety, there is an homeless situation going on downtown, so I would just avoid that area after dark. Otherwise? Completely safe. As for budget, there is something for every price point - you just gotta research a bit of everything online and be willing to explore according to what you’re looking for. Great city for a quick weekend reset, with a good balance of things to do. The aquarium is a must.

Hotels and airbnb can be quite expensive. Groceries aren’t cheap either but going out to eat is reasonably priced. Lots of homeless people!! They seem to mostly mind their own business but it felt pretty unsafe. Some parks are completely taken over by homeless camps. They also can come up to you to ask for money or food. Sometimes I buy them something, adding more to the travel costs. Avoid routes coming past homeless shelters to avoid seeing them. Little Italy is a nice place to stay. Kensington Market is cute to visit for cafes, thrift shopping and music.

Meet locals in Toronto

About Me

Hi! I’m Suhanna, born and raised in what is now called Toronto. I took my first solo trip in 2018 to Cuba (after having visited previously with friends) and have been enjoying my little solo adventures here and there since. I do occasionally travel with friends but generally plan my own trips and make friends along the way. Wandering, checking out local art and local eats are usually my main activities when traveling. I also enjoy going to out of town music festivals (Osheaga, Sueños, Gov Ball) and am always open to meeting people at them. If it looks like we’re going to cross paths in the same city, feel free to message!
