To me it’s a very safe place but as a woman I don’t feel safe all the time wherever I am… I do a lot of stuff alone in Ghent (day & night) & so far no bad experiences. I would say you can safely walk around on your own.

The city centrum is very safe, the neighbourhoods around (Harmonie, Zurenborg, Zuid, Berchem, Borgerhout, and more to the South -- Mortsel, Edegem, Wilrijk,...) as well. Not much theft or pickpocketing, almost no violent crime either. Stay away from Dam, Kiel, Linkeroever the area around Koningsplein after at night (after midnight-5am). Most likely nothing will happen to you, but there are some sketchy guys, drug dealers and not that many other people in the street.

Belgium is generally a safe country, I’ve never really had any problems. It’s just that in Brussels it’s always recommended to stay alert — as a woman alone I don’t feel very comfortable there in the evening or at night.
Posted: October 2, 2025I have never actually felt unsafe in the city. It ofcourse is something that you always keep in the back of your mind. But I’ve never been in a situation here that I was followed or being spoken to in a wrong way.

Kinda safe but it will feel dangerous at night specially in winter. But in summer will be much more better. There are a lot of homeless on the street side, in the store or on the metro. Remember ignore them

I spent 2,5 days in Brussels and half a day in Bruges. I loved the European District, especially the House of European History, the Parlamentarium and the Hemicycle visit. If you're interested in politics or history, it's definitely worth a visit. I stayed at IBIS (city centre) and felt quite safe, though I was overly careful after reading reviews about how unsafe Brussels is supposed to be. The only place I felt worried was Brussels Midi Train Station. People were begging in front of the escalators, in such a way that you can hardly get off the escalator without them being directly in your face. There is a high police presence at this train station though, so in spite of my experience, I did not feel genuinely unsafe. I would, however, keep a closer look on my belongings in this area. I had to ask for directions in Brussels a few times and people were always kind and helpful. One more thing: If you take the underground, be aware that they have multiple lines driving on the same tracks at the same platform! Make sure you get on the right train.
