During the day Ostend is pretty safe overall. At night, especially during winter time it can be very quiet. Some areas can be quite sketchy at night. The nightlife is mostly safe, but I've been harassed a couple of times but there's always a lot of police in the area and they are really helpful.

I think Ostend is as safe as any moderately big city in general. I myself haven't had anything bad happen here, but obviously things do happen. I use public transportation as my main way of getting to places and have never had any issues with it. At places like the train station, you're more likely to get approached by someone but 9 out of 10 times it's bc people want to ask directions or what track their train is at.
