Solo Female Travel in Sibiu

Sibiu is a captivating city located in the heart of Transylvania, Romania, packed with rich medieval history. Notably known for its vividly colored Baroque buildings and the iconic 'eyes of Sibiu' - attic windows resembling eyes that seem peering down from rooftops. Sibiu's charm extends from its grand squares such as the Large Square (Piața Mare) hosting the Brukenthal National Museum, to its Gothic-style Evangelical Cathedral with a striking steeple. The city also prides itself on vibrant festivals such as the Sibiu International Theatre Festival that draws artists globally and is recognized as one of Europe’s cultural capitals. The old town's alleyways, bridges, and towers make Sibiu a delightful destination for history buffs, while the nearby Făgăraș Mountains cater to outdoor adventurers.

Safety:Very safe

Sibiu is generally a safe destination for solo female travelers. The city is known for its safety and walkability. Like any city, there are some areas that are better to avoid late at night, but common sense and standard precautions are typically enough to keep you safe. The locals are friendly and usually willing to help should you encounter any difficulty.

Transport:Easy

Sibiu is moderately easy to navigate as a solo female traveler. Its size allows for most attractions to be conveniently reachable by foot. Local public transportation is reliable and covers a majority of the city. English is commonly spoken among the younger population and translating apps tend to do a good job translating Romanian. However, signage is predominantly in Romanian and some neighborhoods can be a bit confusing to navigate.

Things to do:Interesting

Sibiu is a captivating destination with a myriad of activities to partake in. It's rich in history with a well-preserved old town, inviting you to explore its quaint cobbled streets, and bystander squares. There are numerous museums to visit such as the Brukenthal National Museum and the Museum of Pharmacy. Its Citadel is emblematic, offering not only an incredible history lesson but also exquisite views of the city from the Clock Tower. Sibiu's unique 'Eyes of the City', emblematic building roofs with eye-shaped windows, add a unique charm. Outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy its proximity to the Fagaras Mountains, offering opportunities for hiking and nature exploration. So, it caters to a range of interests from history buffs to nature lovers.

Food:Above average

Eating in Sibiu provides you with an opportunity to sample a variety of tastes ranging from local Romanian dishes to international cuisine. From traditional soups and stews to local baked goods and desserts, the city's gastronomical repertoire is rich and diverse. One can also find plenty of vegetarian and vegan options. However, some might find their choices limited in certain places if they follow restrictive dietary habits.

Budget:Affordable

Sibiu can be considered quite budget-friendly, especially on a European scale. Accommodation, oversized meals, and transportation can all be found at relatively low costs. Visiting local attractions, such as museums and the Old Town, are also reasonably priced unless you opt for exclusive tours or experiences. However, luxury services like fine dining and high-end hotel stays can elevate costs.

Is Sibiu worth visiting?

Solo travel experience

Sibiu was one of my favorite places in Romania. The city is quite small, very pedestrian-friendly and full of interesting places. I had no safety issues.
