Solo Female Travel in Montpellier

Montpellier is a dynamic, vibrant city nestled in the heart of the Languedoc-Roussillon region in Southern France. Known for its vivacious student population - courtesy of the town's large universities, it encapsulates a youthful spirit while still retaining its rich historical charm. Montpellier is, in fact, steeped in history, renowned for its medieval architecture like the Antigone District, and the famous Place de la Comédie - the town's pulsing hub where an ancient opera house meets contemporary street arts. Additionally, it is recognized for its distinctive Mikvé, a Jewish ceremonial bath dating back to the 13th Century. But cultural appreciation does not stop at the city edges: Montpellier is only a few miles away from the Mediterranean Sea, offering sun-kissed beaches and stunning seaside vistas. Its medley of historic and modern features with a pinch of coastal allure makes Montpellier an unmissable spot in Southern France.

Is Montpellier worth visiting solo?

Safety:Safe

Montpellier is generally a safe city for solo female travelers. Crimes are relatively low and major tourist areas are regularly patrolled by local police. Day-to-day activities can be carried out without much worry. However, like in any other city, it's always wise to be cautious, especially during late hours in less populated areas, to avoid any potential safety issues.

Transport:Easy

Montpellier is fairly navigable with a compact city center, most of the key attractions are within walking distance which makes exploring the city convenient. It also has an efficient tramway system for longer distances. However, language might be a slight barrier if you don't speak French, but locals are generally very helpful to tourists. It is a relatively safe city but like any place, do take standard precautions especially at night.

Things to do:Interesting

Montpellier is a vibrant destination that offers a variety of attractions besides festivals or cyclical events. Art and culture enthusiasts will enjoy the Musée Fabre and the diverse architectural styles, while nature lovers will appreciate the botanical garden Jardin des plantes de Montpellier and nearby beaches. The city's old town, 'Ecusson,' provides ample shopping and dining experiences. Although small, Montpellier provides a rich and fulfilling travel experience.

Food:Above average

The food in Montpellier boasts of a good mix of diversified cuisines. With choices vary from traditional French cuisine to Mediterranean, Moroccan, and other international cuisines, food lovers are spoiled for choice. Locally sourced seafood dishes and regional wines are popular. Various patisseries, boulangeries, and fromageries offer a delightful experience for dessert and cheese lovers. However, dishes may lean on the expensive side.

Budget:Moderate

Montpellier offers a moderate range for travel expenses. Prices for food, accommodation, and local transportation are reasonable, but not as cheap as other places in Europe. Enjoying local cuisine at an average restaurant will cost you decently, and affordable accommodations are available but can vary greatly. Attractions like museums, galleries, and historical sites have entry fees that you'll need to account for. However, if you plan in advance, there are ways to experience Montpellier on a budget, like taking advantage of free city sights or choosing less expensive dining options.

Solo travel experience

Montpellier is one of my favourite cities in France :) Travelling solo there was a lot of fun. I really appreciated that the city is close to the sea & that the people are really relaxed & open-minded.
