Solo Female Travel in Estonia

Estonia, a truly enchanting gem tucked away in the northeastern region of Europe, is renowned for its rich meld of Scandinavian, Russian, and German influences, all seamlessly blended into its unique identity. Despite its modest size, the republic, which shares borders with Russia and Latvia and oversees the Baltic Sea, is abundant with attractions. It is notably famous for its medieval architecture, vividly reflected in the well-preserved cobblestone streets and winding alleyways of Tallinn, its vibrant capital. With a vast expanse of immaculate forests, alluring coastlines studded with sandy beaches, and over 1500 charming islands, Estonia offers its visitors an exclusive fusion of urban setting and wilderness. Moreover, its distinct local culture impressively thrives amidst its advanced digital society, making it the pioneer in digital governance worldwide.

Safety:Very safe

Estonia is generally a safe nation, particularly for solo female travelers. Its crime rate is relatively low and citizens are helpful towards tourists. Day or night, city or countryside, generally, it is safe to travel around. However, like anywhere in the world, it’s always important to stay aware of your surroundings, especially when in a new place or in crowded areas. Stay cautious, but at the same time, enjoy what the country has to offer.

Transport:Easy

Navigating Estonia is rather comfortable. The country is small, making traveling between cities quick and convenient. Most locals speak good English, so getting directions or help is often easy. Both urban and rural areas are generally safe to move around. The infrastructure supports various modes of transportation.

Things to do:Interesting

Estonia is rich in history offering many wonderful opportunities to explore. The nation is full of medieval architecture, such as the well-preserved old town of Tallinn, which has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Natural beauty also abounds, from breathtaking coastlines to enchanting forests and national parks. Activities include hiking, wildlife spotting, exploring historical buildings, and taking part in various water sports. It has an interesting food scene as well offering a variety of dishes, including its unique traditional cuisine. Additionally, Estonia is known for its tech-savvy environment, being the birthplace of Skype and pioneering in digital innovations, which can be an interesting facet to explore.

Food:Above average

Estonian cuisine offers a robust variety of food influenced by its historical influences and its extreme weather conditions. Traditional meals consist of hearty dishes like black pudding, pork, potatoes, and herring. However, there's a burgeoning food scene in Estonia, particularly in its capital city, Tallinn, where you can find everything from vegan cafes to high-end dining experiences. The country's appreciation for locally sourced & organic ingredients is very noticeable. While it may lack a bit in terms of international food diversity, the freshness and quality of its local dishes are worthy of praise.

Budget:Affordable

Estonia is quite budget-friendly for solo female travelers. Cost of living and traveling is relatively low compared to most Western European countries. Public transport, food, and accommodation are quite affordable. However, certain tourist spots and activities might be somewhat pricey.

Solo travel experience

I have been in Tallin many times, the capital of Estonia is full of culture and it is one of the most safest destinations I have ever been. In Tallinn you can have a medieval experience which is really authentic. There are lots of affordable spas around the city and you can combine the trip with relaxing time and long walks in the old town. Places I recommend: Cafe Maiasmokk - Tallinn’s oldest cafe. Old Hansa - Fully immersed medieval restaurant experience. III Draakon - The coolest medieval tavern in the town. Take a bolt ride or a tram and go to Telliskivi - the creative city! I would recommend Nihke Kohvik for brunch and explore the local stores around that area. You can get to know the Estonian design style for clothes and fashion, and find art galleries. Another place which I loved was Nudist Wine bar, which is very cozy. Take a free walking tour in the old town to learn about Estonian culture. Go to O’Learys to find a lot of games to play, watch sports or bowling. Enjoy a day at a Spa in Tallinn, I recommend Mustamae Elamus Spa for many options of pools, massage and saunas. Take a ferry in the port of Tallinn and travel to Helsink, you can make it one day trip or come back next day. Well, there are so much more. There is always something nice to do in Tallinn, enjoy your trip!

About Me

I am very enthusiastic about travelling, keen to learn about different cultures and every now and then travel solo. However, travelling solo brings me some uneasyness about safety - at least when travelling outside of Europe or some parts of Asia. Sharing knowledge and getting support from like-minded women would be great 🙂
