How safe is Estonia?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Safe

Estonia, especially the capital city of Tallinn, is relatively safe for solo female travelers even during nighttime. It is culturally rich with friendly locals and well-lit streets. However, as with any destination, it is always best to maintain common sense safety precautions. Avoid walking alone in less crowded and poorly lit areas at night.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Very safe

Public transportation in Estonia is highly reliable and is generally considered to be extremely safe. With a well-connected network of buses, trams and trains, it provides convenient access throughout the country. Surveillance systems and regular security checks in public transportation vehicles and stations further ensure safety. Female solo travelers have reported feeling safe, even during late-night traveling. However, basic safety precautions like being aware of your surroundings must always be practiced.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Low

Estonia, particularly in cities like Tallinn, is generally a safe place for solo female travelers. Street harassment is not a common issue, although instances may occur occasionally. Local men tend to be respectful and the culture is fairly progressive. However, it's still important to take caution, especially during evenings and in less crowded spaces. Remember to maintain common-sense precautions, just like in any other foreign country.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Low

Estonia generally enjoys a low rate of petty crimes such as pick pocketing or bag snatching. Most tourists visit without any incidents. Areas with heavy tourist traffic or public transport can be a bit more prone to such incidents, but exercising normal precautions usually ensures a safe trip.

Viljandi, Solo travel

I visited the city for Folk Music Festival and it was amazing experience! Many people attended it and everyone was friendly and helpful. Local people created welcoming atmosphere for my stay and overall no problems occurred. The city is inexpensive and compact, so it’s easy to get to any place if not on foot, but with a bike for sure.

Estonia, Solo travel

Overall, it is a very beautiful country. I visited Tallinn. It had both a modern and an ancient side. The Old Town is impressive. There are many fast food places, so I didn't have any problems with food. Since I was there for a short time, I couldn't explore the local restaurants much. But I plan to go again.

Tallinn, Solo travel

As a single trip at first I didn’t feel so safe, but when talking to people and asking everyone agreed that the capital of Estonia-Tallin is a fairly safe city. The historical center is a really great place, and you can easily find it and see all of the interesting places in 1,5 day… I expend just 7-8 hours there because I had to take a fly from Tallin to another place.

Sillamäe, Family travel

I felt very safe there. Everyone was friendly and helpful. Although some people didn’t understand Estonian and had to talk Russian. But overall people spoke Estonian and probably could have spoken English if needed. Really recommend walking in the town. It’s so pretty and magical. Also really recommend Sillamäe museums. Really interesting if you’re interested in history.

Tallinn, Family travel

Tallinn was a very nice city! My family and I went over the holidays and it is a beautiful city. The old center is quite touristy and a bit more expensive than the rest of the city. But overall really worth it! I wouldn’t recommend staying for too long as it’s relatively small, three days should be enough!

Hiiumaa, Solo travel

I felt very safe on this island. The wool mill is open to the public and sell beautiful wool products as well. There are many interesting sculptures around. Local farms for fresh produce and handicrafts to buy and admire. The parks were wonderful and the locals wonderful. I enjoyed my time island hopping in this beautiful country.

Tallinn, Group travel

I feel safe because I travelled for work and were with my colleagues. It kinda reminded my hometown, it was nice. Havent seen any red flags, prices are normal as in Baltic countries prices. I would suggest to try their national candies - Kalev!

Tallinn, Solo travel

Overall, I felt really safe in Tallinn. I would recommand going to Pirita Beach, visit the old town and take a bus to go into one of the bog around Tallinn if you are there in summer. The bog I would recommand is the Viru Bog, one hour away from Tallinn but really worth it! I would also suggest to go to the Kalev Coffee shop, in the old town. It is the oldest one is the city and it's really good!

Tallinn, Group travel

We visited Tallinn during the independance day in February. It was an interesting and fascinating experience. The weather was unfortunately not the best but we were still able to visit the main parts of the city. Tallinn is a great City with a lot to visit. The old town as well as the beaches (in summer) are really great!

Kuressaare, Group travel

I've been there multiple times, mostly off season for work. Some hotels are more run down than others. I felt safe going for a run alone after dark, the city is so small and quiet it's hard to imagine any crimes happening. There's not much to see but there's a lot of good restaurants and bars for such a small city.

Honestly it really depends on where you go. As I didn't live in the capital city I can't speak on that, but the smaller city I used to live in (Tartu) always felt really safe and lovely for a girl in their 20s. Especially also as the city had a bunch of students all around definitely made it feel like a lovely location as a woman.

Tallinn

I have lived here for 15 years and haven't experienced any unpleasant or dangerous situations. Easily can walk alone, even in dark, also in public transport. There is a great street lightning as well. In general - need to be careful like everywhere else, but no reason to be scared or worried.

About Me

Hi there! I'm Nina, and I've been living in the south side of Chicago for over ten years! When I'm not plotting my next adventure, I'm hanging out with my black lab mix Dracula, crafting small leather goods like wallets and keychains, or going to concerts! Despite my eagerness to travel and go go go, I love watching movies and binging tv shows on the couch with my pup. I was born and raised in St. Louis, MO and when I took my first trip to Chicago in 2010, I got an overwhelming feeling of joy for experiencing new places! Since then, I've been to about half of the US states, Niagara falls in Canada, Cancun & Cozumel in Mexico. Most recently, I was able to spend some time in Scandinavia visiting Copenhagen, Stockholm, Bergen, Molde, and Oslo. In May I'll be going to Lisbon, Portugal for a week to see my favorite band KGLW and then in August they have their first US music fest in Colorado I'll be attending! I got the travel bug hard and I'm currently trying to plan a return to Scandinavia with stops in Tallin, Estonia and Turku, Finland for December! In April 2026 I have a trip planned with EF Ultimate break to go to Thailand, and I'm looking to extend and stay in Bali, or Laos!
