Is Belgium good for solo travel?

Safety:

Safety:Very safe

Belgium is generally a safe country to travel for solo female travelers. Violent crime is low, however, like every other place in the world, it's always wise to stay cautious and vigilant, especially during night hours or when visiting isolated areas. As a solo female traveler, it is recommended to keep in touch with family, avoid sharing specifics about accommodation and travel, and follow travel advisories. Also, be aware of pickpocketing in busy tourist areas or public transport.
Transport:

Transport:Easy

Belgium presents relatively easy navigation for solo travelers. With its compact size and efficient public transportation systems including trains, buses and trams, traveling between cities and towns is quite convenient. Additionally, the common use of English aids communication. However, understanding the different region's transportation can be a bit confusing initially.
Things to do:

Things to do:Interesting

Belgium offers a diverse range of activities making it a fascinating country to visit. There are stunning architectural gems to explore, from the historic Grand Place in Brussels to the charming medieval buildings of Bruges. Museums abound for art lovers, particularly those interested in surrealism and art nouveau. Chocolate and beer connoisseurs will be delighted by the wide range of quality products to sample. Additionally, Belgium’s convenient size and excellent transport links make it easy to explore. Despite this, it can be a dreary country during the rainier months, and some might find it less dynamic compared to larger European countries.
Food:

Food:Excellent

Belgium offers a truly diverse and unforgettable gastronomic experience. Renowned for more than just its fries and waffles, the country boasts a rich variety of cuisines, from mouthwatering seafood at coastal regions to hearty stews and meats of the inland areas, along with a range of international food due to the cosmopolitan nature of major cities like Brussels. Besides, Belgium is famous for its chocolate and beer, both considered the best in the world.
Budget:

Budget:Moderate

Belgium falls in the mid-range in terms of budget. While not as expensive as some other Western European countries like Switzerland, it might be pricier compared to Eastern Europe. Accommodation, food, and transportation are of good standard but can add up. Look for budget-friendly options like hostels and local eats. Free activities include exploring beautiful cities like Bruges and Brussels on foot. Always plan ahead to save on costs.

I felt safe in Belgium in general “not really in the evening”. I like that they are a week ticket for students with only 20 euros and we can go to all Beligum with train. I got lucky that someone hosted me and I felt pretty safe in the neighborhood in Brussels.

Hello, I regularly go to Belgium because I live not far from the border, and it's always a pleasure to meet and interact with the Belgians. The country is also very beautiful, and the architecture is magnificent. Fatma

I spent two days in Brussels as a young woman alone. I stayed in a hostel near the center. In general it was very nice. The city was very chaotic and especially near the Midi station and in the non-tourist neighborhoods you have to be careful and I don't recommend going out alone at night. But in general I didn't have a bad experience.

Brussels is a very beautiful and multicultural city. It is easy to communicate with locals weather you're doing it in English or French. The city center is very animated and very great to go and party with your friends!

I stayed in the city center but 4 or so blocks away from the main plaza. I liked being away from the noise of evening partiers but close to shops. I always felt safe walking back to the flat by myself after dark. It's a beautiful city, so I mostly walked around and marvelled at the architecture-art nouveau is my favorite design style. Dutch and French are the main languages spoken here. I understand very little of each, but still found it easy to get around. I spent around $550 on Airbnb for 3 nights which felt high, but the flat was beautiful and centrally located.

A country in which I felt extremely safe, I could walk alone at night without worrying, I could see the sights on foot and the food was also excellent. I stayed in a hostel and it was well located, close to the train stations

Brussels is such a pedestrian friendly city and its almost impossible to get lost when moving around. Unlike countries like France, its important to only cross at pedestrians crossings, a faux pas I committed more than once. But generally people are nice and easy going, even in the most touristy parts where people are easily irritated. Most people switch easily between French/Dutch and English as well.

Overall, Brussels was ok. It felt relatively safe for the most part, except at night when there were a lot of drunk men on the streets. I was harassed and groped by two drunk men at the train station one night. The city is pretty, but if you’ve visited Europe it’s nothing out of the ordinary. My experience in Brussels was relatively lackluster.

Leuven, Solo travel

Leuven is extremely safe, even at night. Lots of drunk students during the week but actually quieter during the weekend. Belgian food isn’t fantastic (with the exception of Liege waffles; it’s a crime not to get one—go to Josephine, it’s better than Pinocchio), but there are other good restaurants around (I recommend Nirvana for incredible Indian) and lots of good vegetarian options. You can do most of Leuven in a day, so it’s a good day trip from Brussels. It’s a beautiful, beautiful city.

It totally depends where you are! In the historical centre, you should be fine. Around the train stations, however, it can get very sketchy and sometimes dangerous. Especially around Gare du Midi (Zuidstation) and the back entrance in particular of the North station, you should be very careful. It’s then mostly a danger of getting robbed from what I’ve heard. In some areas of Schaerbeek, and St Josse you should also be vigilant.

There are a lot of pickpockets here, so be very careful of your belongings, especially in train stations like Midi and North. North is the train station you want to avoid during the night time. There are alot of international connections from Midi, so it's relatively less scary, but still be very vigilant about your valuables. There's a LOT of petty crimes here. They also snatch your necklaces sometimes if they look valuable. I have never experienced that but a couple of my friends have. You would want to stay near the center (De Brouckere, Central Station) or even the outside near Stephanie (a bougie area), European Quarters (working area), and Etterbeek. Avoid Northern areas (Botanique, Schaerbeek)

Local tips

Bekkevoort is safe for women. But there is nothing to do in this little town. When visiting Belgium you should go to Brugge, Gent, Antwerp, Bruxelles or Leuven, the big cities. It is however very easy to get from Bekkevoort to Leuven by using public transport.

The city centre of ghent is very diverse and save. I would say neighborhoods like rabot or brugsepoort may be less safe - I had some experience as a young 20y/o of man in their forties coming up to me asking for my number for example. In the city there's something for everyone. There's graffitistreet which is definitely worth walking thru in my opinion. Many bars with terraces next to the water, which could be really cute and romantic. And every once a year in july the centre is totally closed off for a ten day long festival all over the city! My favorite place to go is Kinky Star, a small cozy bar that throws gigs weekly. They present a diverse range of genres, but focus on promoting small and alternative artists! So come find the underground of Ghent here ;)

I find Brussels to be pretty safe for women. The city is not that big, so if you’re up for it, you can walk almost anywhere. Night busses are only in the weekends (fri/sat/sun) until 3 am. Not the most practical, but ubers are available too.

Namur is pretty small all things considered. From the train station to the citadelle main attraction) there is about 20 minutes to walk. Safe to walk at all day and at night tho I stay away from the street straight across the train station at night (Rue Godefroid) Everything is closed on Sundays, Saturdays are pretty lively, as there is a city market

Brussels is very safe for women, public transport works until after midnight and I never had issues with its frequentation. The city is not big so you can walk a lot and streets have good lightning. Bars and restaurants are busy until around 23 in general, later in the weekend.

Arrive at beautiful Guillemins station and admire it's architecture. Head to la Boverie park for a stroll in the most peaceful area of the city along the water. You might spot a few running wild rabbits as they do live there freely. For an urbex experience head to la chartreuse parc to visit abandonned buildings. Go the rue horschateau, climb the famous Montagne de Bueren stairs and take a strol around the cute streets of the citadel.

Hi! I’ve always lived in Belgium having Antwerp as the closest big city as from where I always lived. After having studied there when I was younger and spending lots of my time growing up there, I moved to the city of Antwerp in 2018. Antwerp is big enough to have everything you need right here, and also small enough not to get lost or loose time getting from one place to another. There’s a lot of different neighbourhoods with different vibes to them. The South of Antwerp (Het Zuid), definitely offers the cosiest bars, restaurants and atmosphere. But all the neighbourhoods do if you know where to go. Feel free to ask! As a women I don’t always feel at ease walking around at night, but I also didn’t experience any trouble. I have often cycled home late at night after visiting a bar, after a concert or after spending time at a friends. My favourite restaurant is definitely Osaka, I love the minimalist interior and the Japanese influenced cuisine is just amazing. They have also nice wines. When you want to eat something Flemish (Belgian), I would absolutely reccoment the cosy Dansing Chocola. Make sure to reserve a table in time. When you’re on a budget I would reccomend Aahaar or the Chinese neighbourhood to visit restaurants. The quickest way to get around is the ‘Velo Antwerpen’ bicycle sharing system. But the trams and busses will get you there too. There’s also scooters available. In terms of neighbourhoods to avoid I wouldn’t feel pleasant walking near ‘Seefhoek’ at night. Touristy things to do: walk all the way up the MAS, to have a city view. If you like churches you can go see the cathedral and the cute surrounding streets. We also have a big shopping street called Meir. If you’re looking for more cosy shopping go check out ‘Wilde Zee’. It’s impossible to summarise a city I know so much about, so feel free to ask any questions!
