Hasselt is a very safe city. Of course you always have to be aware of your surroundings, and maybe some areas can be slightly less safe than others, but in general Hasselt is one of the safest cities in Belgium. It’s not a big city like Antwerp or Brussels, and there aren’t as many tourists. The crime rate is also very low and most people are friendly and helpful. Because it’s a small and calm city, the streets can be quite empty and dark when you’re walking alone at night, but I’ve never experienced harassment or felt unsafe.
Posted: January 11, 2025Hasselt is a small city that is clean, calm and very safe. I feel completely safe as a young woman of 25. Ofcourse you occasionally bump in to men going out or partying, but I have had anyone even talk to me that I did not want to in 5 years of living these.

Hi! I have lived in Belgium all my life. I am a mum of two young children and recently the travel jitters have flared up again. I look forward to meeting new people from all over the world.
