Is Malta Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

Malta is generally safe for solo female travelers. It's a small nation with a low crime rate. Violent crime is rare and most areas are safe to walk in, even at night. However, as in any country, there can be instances of pickpocketing or similar in high-traffic tourist areas. To ensure your safety, always be aware of your surroundings, keep valuable items out of sight, and stay in populated areas especially if it's late at night. Overall, it's a friendly nation with hospitable people that many solo female travelers enjoy visiting.

Safety index

Safety at night:Safe

Much like any urban area worldwide, safety can vary from one place to another in Malta. Overall, the island is generally safe, but it's always best for solo female travelers to avoid deserted areas and be mindful of their surroundings after dark. Crime rate is relatively low, but occasional petty theft or pickpocketing can happen, mainly in crowded areas. People are friendly and helpful, and most areas are well-lit and patrolled. However, always trust your gut feeling; if something doesn't seem right, it's best to stay away.

Public transportation:Safe

Public transportation in Malta is generally safe and reliable. Bus services cover all main areas of the island, making it convenient for everyday travel. The buses are clean and well-maintained. However, please bear in mind that it can get crowded at times, so always keep an eye on your belongings. It's better to avoid the bus during peak hours if you're carrying large luggage. Taxi services in Malta are also safe, though a little costlier, and services like Bolt and eCabs are available if you prefer a more private ride.

Street harassment:Low

Malta is generally known to be a welcoming and safe country to visit. Street harassment incidents are not pronounced and usually less of a concern for solo female travelers. It's recommended, however, to be mindful and practice common safety measures, particularly during night hours or when in less-crowded areas.

Petty crimes:Low

Malta is generally a safe country with low levels of petty crime. That said, like anywhere else in the world, instances of pickpocketing or bag snatching can happen especially in the major tourist hotspots. It's always wise to keep your belongings secure and be aware of your surroundings, but there is not a significant likelihood of encountering issues in regards to petty crimes.

Tap water:Safe

In Malta, tap water is generally safe to drink as it undergoes strict testing by local authorities. However, because it's high in mineral content due to the island's rock formations, many locals and travelers prefer the taste of bottled water. It's always recommended to stay hydrated and if you have any concerns, opt for bottled or filtered water.

Overall Malta was lovely! I was traveling budget friendly so I stayed at granny’s inn hostel and it was clean and safe. I would highly recommend visiting Mdina, it’s a small bus ride from the main city of Valletta but it’s so worth it. I took the buses and despite the language barrier I found it very simple to navigate. The roads are pretty rough though so prep for bumping around.

Malta is truly very beautiful, and public transportation is very affordable. A bus ride costs 2€, and Ubers are also quite cheap. The food there was delicious and reasonably priced. I paid 18€ for a large portion of pasta and an Aperol. I felt very safe during the day, but it is recommended not to be alone in Malta at night.

Solo travel experience

Malta was my first solo trip. It is very safe there, public transportation is quite good and there is a lot to see. I was there for 5 days and plan to return. Valetta is really charming, and Mdina and Rabat are places that you must see. It's very easy to get to Gozo and I used an open-top bus to tour the attractions. I am a very nervous person and I never felt uncomfortable there.

Solo travel experience

Malta was my first solo trip and I really had a great time there. I used buses to explore and I felt very safe. Valletta is wonderful but crowded - I only went there for one day, visited the maritime museum and watched the cannon shooting. I stayed in a small, family-run hotel with a pool in St. Paul's Bay, which was ridiculously cheap, and the staff was very friendly and helpful. Everyone was talking on the buses. I noticed that I prefer to eat the main meal at lunch time, people seemed more willing to chat, and eating lunch alone does not seem strange.

Solo travel experience

I embarked on a solo trip to Malta in June, staying in Sliema and travelling around by bus. The bus system is extensive, but it may not be reliable. There were times when a local told me that the bus no longer stops there, so make sure you have plenty of time if you want to travel by bus. I also recommend downloading the bus app, as it shows actual bus arrival times. I swam, dived, and hiked solo, never feeling unsafe. Malta is very beautiful, with plenty of stunning landscapes.

Family travel experience

Malta is very safe and beautiful. My sister and I were there for a week. Excellent transport system. We stayed there in an Airbnb and went diving, horse riding and sightseeing wherever we wanted. We never felt unsafe.

Malta was really safe. Even as a woman, I had no problems or harassment. But always be careful with your belongings... It's not expensive, but in summer accommodation is more expensive and it's hard to find a good deal. As a solo traveler, it's better to have a single room, it's cheaper. I went to Campus Hub Malta (https://campushubmalta.com/). You can book your accommodation (the price depends on the period and type of room you book). If interrested you have to do that early (the process is not like booking or airbnb). And I had access to the swimming pool. For transportation, I used buses to go everywhere. There is differents options, I choose a 20 euro card for 7 days of unlimited travel. It was very useful. The only thing to know is that they often arrive late (in summer for sure). There is a bus from/to the airport. The ticket costs less than 3 euros and you can buy your week pass there. There is something very nice for solo travelers, the English Café. Almost every day there is an event where you can meet people. Highly recommended

Solo travel experience

I fully recommend Malta. I went there for a solo trip for the first time in December last year. The island is perfectly connected by buses, so you can easily get anywhere. Practically everyone speaks English, and during my 5 days of solo travel, I never felt threatened or in danger.

I had a wonderful time in Malta. I stayed for a week on the island of Gozo, in July. Malta seemed very safe to me. I spent only one day in Valletta, which was a calm and pleasant city. I had no problems with harassment on the streets. Swimming in the sea at Gozo was safe, and I also managed to go on a half-day diving trip. Many landmarks can be found on Gozo, such as ancient temples, and the cathedral in Valletta is worth seeing (but one must dress appropriately, covering arms and knees). I also visited the beautiful, mountainous town of Mdina, which looked like it's out of a fairy tale. Temperatures were very high, every day above 30 degrees Celsius.

Is Malta safe to live in?

After covid us Maltese got a bit worried about femicides as males started acting strange but overall police are being visible in streets and makes people feel safe. Bars and restaurants are 100% safe even the people who serve are very helpful.

I haven’t lived here for very long, but the men/guys I’ve encountered walking alone have always been great at keeping their distance, making sure to not walk right behind you, even crossing a street to make you feel safe. Everyone is super kind, and I’ve not once felt unsafe walking alone, neither day or night.

There are not many things to do in Malta. We did spend a whold day in Valetta capital of Malta, one day is enough. We stayed at a friend house so free accommodation 😁 I do recommend trips to nearby islands. Comino was lovely and has sand beach, and Blue lagoon was incredible Food wasn't great but people are friendly enough. Lots of rats and cockroach😅
