Is Jordan Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

Jordan has traditionally been one of the safer countries in the Middle East for solo female travelers. Its reputation for hospitality, combined with its stable political environment typically leads to a safe and welcoming setting for visitors. However, it's important to respect Jordan's conservative culture. Dress modestly, avoid isolated areas, specially at night, and always trust your intuition when interacting with people. While cases of serious crime against tourists are rare, incidents of harassment can occur, similar to many destinations around the world.

Safety index

Safety at night:Safe

Jordan is considered relatively safe even at night, as it is generally known for its warm hospitality and the people are typically welcoming and protective of tourists. However, it's always best to exercise caution and avoid less crowded and poorly lit areas. Moreover, adhering to the local customs and dressing modestly would also contribute to a more comfortable experience. Always remember, no matter what country you are in, staying vigilant and aware of your surroundings are key safety measures to be followed.

Public transportation:Safe

Overall, public transportation in Jordan, including buses, taxis, and services like Uber, is relatively reliable and safe. Petty crimes such as pickpocketing can occur but are not widespread. It's best to be cautious, especially at night, and avoid isolated areas. Always ensure that drivers turn on their meters or agree on a price before the trip starts to avoid overcharging. Female solo travelers generally feel comfortable, but need to be aware of cultural norms and dress modestly. Remember, it's always important to follow your instincts when feeling unsafe.

Street harassment:Low

As a traveler in Jordan, you may encounter occasional unsolicited attention or comments, typically in more crowded or tourist populated areas. However, overall, the locals are generally respectful towards women and harassment is not commonplace. It's still advisable to stay cautious and adopt local customs regarding dressing modestly to further minimize any unwanted attention.

Petty crimes:Low

Jordan is considered one of the safest countries in the Middle East. While petty crimes such as pickpocketing and bag snatching occasionally occur, particularly in crowded public places like markets and bus stations, they are not prevalent. Nevertheless, it's important to maintain basic precautions such as keeping an eye on your personal belongings and avoiding displaying expensive items. Many locals are welcoming, the majority of visits are trouble-free.

Tap water:Unsafe

While tap water in Jordan is treated, it may still carry bacteria and is generally not recommended for drinking. It's advisable to stick to bottled or purified water to avoid potential health issues like stomach upset. Always stay hydrated but with safe and clean sources of water.

Solo travel experience

I rented a car at the airport and drove all over Jordan for 10 days. I never felt in danger, the people were helpful and friendly. I loved Petra, spent a night in the desert, visited the ruins in Jerash, and saw amazing mosaics in Madaba.

I spent 10 days traveling by car through Jordan. This country is a true jewel. Every place exceeded my expectations. Moreover, I felt extremely safe there. Here is my travel itinerary: 2 nights in Amman, 3 nights in Petra, 2 nights in Wadi Rum, 2 nights in Aqaba, and 1 night in Amman.

Solo travel experience

I felt completely safe. I rented a car there and drove from Amman, to the Dead Sea, through Wadi Rum, all the way to Petra. It was an amazing trip.

Solo travel experience

I traveled alone in Jordan and despite dressing modestly, I was sexually harassed on three different occasions around Petra. Perhaps I was just unlucky, but I will never go back there alone, I will never feel safe there as a single woman again.

Solo travel experience

I traveled alone to Jordan in August. Jordan is one of my favorite countries to visit. I never felt unsafe there, and the Jordanians are very kind and helpful. I recommend dressing modestly, but they are not too strict about the dress code. I did encounter some interest from men, but I consider it harmless. I rented a car and traveled between Amman, Aqaba, Petra, and Wadi Rum.

Solo travel experience

I traveled alone to Jordan last year, which was one of my favorite places. I went on a trip to Wadi Rum, Petra, and the Dead Sea, where I met many other solo female travelers. I felt safe, and people were extremely friendly. I also spent a few days in Irbid and crossed the border into Jerusalem.

Group travel experience

I felt safe in Jordan. I was on a tour, but the guide told us that they don't observe Islamic law there, but one where women have legally guaranteed rights. The only thing I didn't like was that in Amman, one child followed me for half a block, saying "give me money."

Group travel experience

Jordan is safe, and the people are friendly. I explored Petra for one intense day and managed to see most places. Wadi Rum is wonderful. I definitely spent too little time there. It is great to observe this place at different times of the day - from sunrise to sunset. The colors are amazing. I recommend staying with the Bedouins and going on a safari. As for transportation, there were four of us and we rented a car.

Solo travel experience

I spent a few days alone in Jordan and a few days sharing a car with other people, as public transport is not very regular. I felt safe, but you have to be aware of scammers in Petra. I was in Petra for 3 days and it was definitely too much. I think one intensive day would be enough. I spent one day in Wadi Rum, sleeping under the stars, and it was the most wonderful.

Solo travel experience

I went alone, flew to Aqaba and spent two days there, then took a bus to Wadi Rum, spent a night in the desert, and because of the storm forecast, I went straight to Petra, because I really didn't want to miss it, so I spent 1.5 days there, then took a bus to Amman. A wonderful country for solitary travel.
