Safety index

Safety at night:Safe

Wadi Rum is generally a safe destination, even during nighttime. The local people are hospitable and possess a strong culture of looking after visitors. However, it's a vast desert region, so it's advisable not to wander alone at night due to the potential risks of getting lost or encountering wildlife. Guided tours or camping within designated areas is more recommended for night activities.

Public transportation:Safe

Public transportation in Wadi Rum is generally considered reliable and safe. Bus rides from Amman or Petra are typically uneventful. Locals are friendly and helpful to tourists. However, services are not highly frequent, and sometimes they do get crowded. Remember to stay alert and safeguard your belongings, especially during peak travel times.

Street harassment:Low

While an element of respectfulness is expected due to the conservative culture of Jordan, it is uncommon to face street harassment in Wadi Rum. Experiences may differ, but generally local Bedouins are polite and curious towards visitors. Solo female travelers are usually treated with hospitality. However, it's always wise to maintain caution and respect local customs and dress codes.

Petty crimes:Low

Wadi Rum is generally a safe place for travelers. Due to its remote location and the strong presence of local Bedouin tribes who respect and value tourism, petty crimes are quite rare. However, like any tourist destination, it is always advisable to be cautious with your belongings to avoid any unexpected circumstances.

Tap water:Unsafe

It is generally not recommended for travelers to drink the tap water in Wadi Rum. It may be safe for locals who are used to it, but foreign travelers could potentially run the risk of getting stomach illnesses due to the different microorganisms present in the water. Always consider bottled water, or use water purification tablets if necessary.

Is Wadi Rum worth visiting?

Group travel experience

Wadi Rum was a wonderful experience for me. I travelled with another friend of mine, and we booked our accommodation with the Bubble Luxotel which was a beautiful property. The views were beautiful, and the weather was perfect in November. Activities available: 4x4 jeep ride, camel riding, stargazing with professional equipment. Overall, it was an absolutely great experience!
