Safety at night:Safe

Greece, overall, is considered quite safe, even at night. However, the safety levels can vary depending on the area. Touristic places and city centers are typically well-lit and populated, making them relatively safe for solo female travelers even in the late hours. However, as with any destination, it's necessary to use caution and stick to populated areas. Avoid walking alone in secluded places or less-transited streets late at night.

Public transportation:Safe

Public transportation in Greece is generally considered quite safe. Buses and metro are run timely and usually punctual. The bigger issues seem to surround pickpocketing, particularly in crowded areas or during peak travel times. But these occurrences are relatively low and can be avoided by remaining vigilant. Remaining aware of your surroundings and belongings will help ensure a safe and pleasant travel experience.

Street harassment:Low

Greece is relatively safe with respect to street harassment. Locals are generally respectful and warm towards tourists. While occasional staring or unwanted attention may be experienced, especially in crowded tourist areas, it is not pervasive or aggressive. However, as always, it's recommended to maintain your situational awareness and adopt culturally appropriate behaviours.

Petty crimes:Low

While Greece generally maintains a low-profile in terms of petty crimes such as pick-pocketing and bag snatching, you still need to remain vigilant. Especially in larger cities and crowded tourist areas, it can occur, primarily driven by the economic challenges the country has faced. However, with common-sense precautions like keeping your belongings close, not showcasing expensive items, and avoiding secluded areas at night, the risk can be considerably lessened.

Tap water:Safe

Tap water in Greece is generally safe and meets all the international safety standards. However, the taste and purity may vary depending on the region. For instance, places like Athens have drinkable tap water, but on many islands or rural areas, locals prefer to drink bottled water. If you’re unsure, the safest course of action is to buy bottled water or ask local advice.

I felt very safe in Greece. I was there on a holiday trip with my family, and we went to Paros, Naxos & Athen. It was absolutely stunning and amazing. The food is great, and the atmosphere is great. I even went out on nights alone, and I felt so safe:)

Couple travel experience

Feel really safe in every places. Recommendation to visit the Islands. The food is too expensive for the quality, as in Italy. Locals are really friendly, we enjoyed to stay in homestay. You can travel by boat easily.

Solo travel experience

First solo travel experience and it was great. Felt safe the entire time both in Athens and the islands (Naxos, Santorini, Crete) Was definitely more cautious and aware of my surroundings in Athens and didn't stay out late after dark, but would have felt safe doing so. Islands felt 100% safe, no concerns at all. People everywhere were super friendly and helpful and speak English so no language barrier if you are a native English speaker. Got scammed on transportation from ferry terminal to hotel on Santorini so definitely arrange transportation to your lodging facility before hand. Overall trip was 10/10!

Solo travel experience

This year I went alone and it was fantastic. My route included Athens, Corfu, Zakynthos, Meteora, Crete, Milos and Santorini for a month. A beautiful and safe country with friendly and helpful people. The transport was good, the ferries were great for crossing to the islands. I recommend taking a tour in every place. You will get to know it better than by yourself.

Travel plan: 3 days in Milos 2 days in Koufonisia 2 days in Ios 2 days in Paros 2 days in Zakynthos Safety: I felt very safe. Recommendations: Paros offers many attractions - beaches, caves, vineyards, charming old towns with completely white houses. I highly recommend it.

In my opinion, Greece is no longer safe. You may feel safe when you walk around but there are many weird and creepy guys who may follow you or start talking to you and make you uncomfortable and worried. Be careful and stay safe

Group travel experience

I travelled to Greece in 2020 and the experience was amazing. I travelled with a group and experience many different areas and thoroughly enjoyed myself. I would definitely go back and visit some of the other islands that I did not get to see. I was a bit disappointed to see how they live where their homes were, but overall it was a great experience, the tourist that I went on were fantastic. I got to meet a lot of wonderful people and experience the culture of Greece.

Solo travel experience

I was in Greece in July on my own - first 2 days in Athens, then a cheap flight to Santorini. I highly recommend it. It was hot, but amazing. Santorini is a small island; you can rent a scooter and go around the island in 1-2 days. I don't recommend staying in Oia or Thira, as the prices are high and there are lots of people. I stayed in Perissa and it was great. Overall, Greece pleasantly surprised me and I definitely want to go back there, even if just for the food.
