Budapest generally offers a safe environment for solo female travelers. Traditional tourist areas are well-policed and have excellent public transportation options, including reputable taxi services. Safety index

Safety at night:Safe

Budapest generally holds a reputation as a safe city for solo female travelers. At night, popular and well-lit areas such as the city center, landmarks, and the Danube promenade are generally secure to navigate alone, and public transportation continuously runs smoothly. However, as with any global city, it's always essential to remain vigilant and use common sense, especially when exploring less crowded neighborhoods or parts of the city outside the main areas.

Public transportation:Safe

Public transportation in Budapest is relatively safe as the metro, trams, buses, and trolleys are well-maintained and reliable. Most locals and tourists use public transport daily without incidences. It is very busy during peak hours, making it less favourable for pickpockets. However, as with any city, it's always wise to stay vigilant and watch out for your belongings, especially in crowded places. Also, while most people speak English in Budapest, language can sometimes be a barrier, so knowing a few basic phrases or having a translation app handy might be beneficial.

Street harassment:Low

Budapest, the capital of Hungary, has relatively low levels of street harassment compared to other global tourist destinations. Nevertheless, as a solo female traveler, it’s always important to stay cautious and aware of your surroundings. For the most part, locals are welcoming and possess a friendly disposition towards tourists. However, just like in any major city, there may be instances of verbal harassment in crowded or less reputable areas. Exercising common safety measures should ensure a pleasant stay in this scenic city.

Petty crimes:Low

Budapest, is generally considered a safe city, although like any major city, some petty crime such as pickpocketing or bag snatching can occur, primarily in crowded places and on public transport. However, it's not rampant, and taking general precautions can help you avoid such situations. It's always recommended to be aware of your surroundings, keep your belongings close, and secure valuables out of sight.

Tap water:Very safe

Tap water in Budapest is completely safe for consumption. The water quality is regularly monitored and tested for any contamination. The local water supply company takes necessary steps to ensure the hygiene and cleanliness of the water. Filtering and disinfection procedures are adhered, providing potable, clean water straight from the tap. It's a practical and environmentally friendly solution, contributing to reducing plastic usage.

Solo travel experience

Budapest is a stunning European city with affordable prices despite its beauty. As a solo female traveler, I didn't get bored and felt safe. I divided my time, spending one day in Buda and one day in Pest, then explored Margaret Island on the third day. In short, I recommend staying for a minimum of three days in this city.

I went to budapest on new year’s 2023 (actually saw the fireworks in the plane it was beautiful). I think budapest is beautiful and if you enjoy sightseeing/history there’s so much of that. Also ofcourse the party scene is very famous there and the thermal baths. I personally felt very safe there but not so much in the metro. I was always rushing when i was in the metro there because i saw so many sketchy people all parts of the day. I stayed at a hostel there and it was a really great one :) Would absolutely visit again

Group travel experience

Very safe even at night. Locals are very friendly and shared us good places to eat! Not cheap but not expensive either, good idea to budget appropriately. Trams and subway system is brill. Worth booking a transfer or sharing a taxi from the airport, once we were on it was fine but it wasn’t easy to find.

Budapest is such a beautiful city. I visited the most beautiful cafe in the world, the beautiful Parliament, the largest baths in Europe, and a bridge that connects Buda and Pest. I loved the city and felt very safe.

Very safe, day and night. I recommend the cruise on the Danube River, the hot air balloon, and the Fisherman's Bastion. The metro is very easy to use; I just used the Budapest Go app and bought the tickets through the app.

I loved my stay in Budapest, I felt constantly safe and the atmosphere was amazing. Budapest was extremely budget friendly, and we stayed in a stunning Airbnb. I would highly recommend Szimpla Kert. I know it’s a classic but it was one of a kind. Budapest was one of my all time favourites and I would go back in a heart beat.

Budapest is one of the best places to visit as a student! Beautiful and very picturesque, with many historic monuments and beautiful castles to enjoy for free. Very cheap as well, with great accommodation options. I went with my girlfriend and felt very safe both in Buda and Pest, you can roam the streets at any time and not worry about weird people stalking you. Perfect!

Solo travel experience

I traveled alone to Budapest in March of this year and I enjoyed it very much. I was always going everywhere, to divert my thoughts from the fact that I was there alone. I felt so safe there that I never felt in danger, even when returning to the hotel at 11 pm.

I've been there many times and I love Budapest. It's really safe and not too crowded, and there are many things to see and do. What I saw/did: The Museum of Light Art, Gellért Thermal Baths, Hungarian Parliament, a Harry Potter-style restaurant called The Magic, Zoo Cafe, a cat cafe, Heroes' Square, Buda Royal Castle, Fisherman's Bastion, ZOO, Shoes on the Danube, Cookie Beacon for brunch, Chain Bridge and Margaret Bridge.

There were not many places to visit. Transportation was very easy. The food was not interesting. Everyone was very friendly. But it was more expensive than I expected. The number of indigenous people was very small
