I think if you know the area, you feel safer and so as a local I am used to how people act and how to act myself. However, for those who are not from or have experienced an area like Stockton it may feel less safe. However, there is still a great community and so many hidden gems that make it all worth it. Most people are harmless most of the time anyways :)

Stockton has an increasing crime rate which makes it feel unsafe as a preface. Stockton high street on the day time can be a lovely place, especially when the flea market is on near the Georgian theatre, however on a night it’s not safe to be walking around alone, best to be in a big group, this stands the same for middlesbrough and thornaby. Yarm it’s surrounding areas is very safe as is Eaglescliffe.
