Guildford is not too big, but there are plenty of fun stuff to do. I never felt threatened for walking alone after dark, even with my cellphone in my hands. Just not too comfortable around drunken guys.

Pretty safe though you have to be careful in the night and in unlit areas or overgrown places. It is like most big towns. There can be violence in the centre in the evenings if big gangs get involved.
