Bangor is a small city and everthing is within wlaking distance. I never feel unsafe walking along or in the dark. As its small there is very little light pollution so it is darker than usal but this is not a problem. There is a big student community with lots of people who will look out for you if anything happend when going out. I have not had a bad experience here yet.
