Is Erzurum Safe for Solo Female Travelers? Safety Ratings & Travel Reports

Erzurum overall has a moderate safety level. Like many destinations, it requires a level of caution and awareness. Turkish people are generally very hospitable, but it's advisable to dress modestly respecting the local culture, avoid isolated areas, especially at night, and always keep personal belongings secured. Be aware that the language barrier can be a challenge. It's recommended to have a reliable taxi app or arrange transport through your hotel when necessary. Always inform someone about your travel plans.

How safe is Erzurum?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Moderate

Erzurum is a relatively safe city in Turkey with a lower crime rate compared to other major cities. However, like anywhere else, caution should be taken, especially at night. It's recommended to avoid deserted or poorly lit areas, and try to stick to the main streets and well-populated areas. While violent crimes are not frequent, pickpocketing or harassment can occasionally occur. Therefore, keeping a low profile and adopting a confident attitude is advised. Secure transportation (like a registered taxi) can be a safer option rather than walking alone at night.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Moderate

The public transportation in Erzurum, is generally reliable and buses run frequently. The locals are friendly, and you can expect help from them if required. However, it's advised to be cautious especially during the night as pickpocketing might occur. It's always good to monitor your belongings and avoid crowded vehicles. Do pay heed to local customs and norms while using public transits.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Low

Erzurum generally maintains respect for tourists, and the street harassment level is comparatively low. The locals, for the most part, are welcoming and show respect to women. As a solo female traveler, it is likely you will encounter more curiosity than harassment. However, it's always advised to dress conservatively, respect local customs and always remain vigilant to ensure your safety.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Low

Erzurum is generally safe to visit for solo female travelers. Petty crimes such as pickpocketing or purse snatching are not frequent, but as with any travel destination, it's always advisable to stay vigilant, especially in crowded markets or public transportation. Women should also maintain a level of cultural sensitivity with regards to their dress and behavior to avoid unwanted attention.

Since the city is in the east side of Turkey, it's a more of a rude city than kind. They don't know much English and the barrier between a woman and a man is so harsh. They don't sit with the opposite sex on the bus but they are not ashamed of catcalling. They seem to respect the woman but also they don't respect. I don't recommend being alone after midnight as a girl. I studied here for 6 years, I live in Antalya normally. And I have to say, I cried a lot, esp in the bus and the roads. I can't wear anything I want unfortunately.
