Izola is an absolutely lovely small seaside town that is a summer vacation favorite for Slovenians (so I heard) and i would say it's a hidden gem to replace a visit to Piran with as it's full of a vibrant life of locals, with small open air concerts etc. I stayed at Hostel Alieti which is a big reason for my good experience since I met a lot of lovely slovenians there of all different ages. Restaurant Parangal was also really good. Not a party town, not a town in general so not much to see, but a lovely atmosphere to enjoy. Would recommend cycling, i cycled to Piran back and loved it. Would absolutely recommend and i'm so happy i stumbled across this town on my Interrail.
Posted: October 22, 2025Experienced: May, 2025Izola is a truly warm and simply beautiful place to slow down. I found the beaches, which are very easily accessible on foot, to be the most beautiful. My favorites were Strunjan Beach and Bele Skale Beach, truly wonderful.
Posted: August 10, 2025Experienced: May, 2025I loooooved it there. Prettiest mountains i’ve ever seen. I wouldn’t really recommend it for people with a fear of heights, but for those who enjoy hiking, it’s an amazing spot – truly beautiful and pleasant. I loved every minute I spent there and I’m longing to go back. If someone wants to swim, that’s possible too in a few lakes, though the water will be pretty cold, haha.

I spent a week travelling around with my parents in the western parts. We did some challenging hikes, but every step was worth it. The views were stunning. The crystal clear water is no joke. It was fun to swim in the Alpine rivers. We did Tolmin, Vintgar, Kozak, Bled, Postojna, Maribor, Skocjan. My favourite was Skocjan. It is out of this world. The size of that underground canyon is just unbelievable. I wish I could post pictures of it, but it was not allowed. But if you need to make a decision between Postojna or Skocjan. Easily Skocjan. Tolmin and Vintgar was another fan favourite. Truly magical. Food was great. Definitely recommend the layered cake in Bled and the cheese soup in Tolmin. The sausages are great everywhere. We travelled by car, but the serpentine ls are no joke. I wish we would go mainly on highways next time. It was not worth the dizziness and twists and curves even the the view was gorgeous. People spoke great English and were super helpful. But I was a bit scared of brown bears. Before travelling a lady was just attacked next to Ljubljana. But obviously it was highly unlikely that I meet one. But still I was a bit stressed about it. I got a mini cow bell in Vintgar just in case. As they say that no bear wants to meet you if they hear you ahead, but obviously next to waterfalls and noise they might not hear you. Money wise I feel like it is not cheap at all. But European prices. Lot of trails were priced. But definitely worth it. I will come back hopefully to do some more wild swimming, canyoning and more underground tours.
Posted: August 7, 2025Experienced: May, 2025It’s the most beautiful place I’ve been. The surroundings are beautiful! The people I’ve met were also very nice. It’s all very cheap but the food is not greaaat. In Ljubljana it was tho. Nice country to wander around in.

Škofja Loka is incredibly safe - I don't even lock the doors unless I'm leaving for more than an hour. Locals are nice and will help you out, the biggest threat is getting cat called by a drunk in the evening! You'll be safe even if alone at night.

You can walk safely on the streets by your own, even during the night. You can take taxis or uber. Slovenians mostly speak english or some other foreign language and are happy to help foreign people.

Vipava is a small place and pretty popular in the summer due to close-by ferattas and hiking trails. People here are nice. Local bars employ students so usually all of them are excited to meet new people and help them.

During the day it is very safe but i personally wouldnt go around parks at night The public transport is also safe, dont rely on trains too much, they are always late Otherwise its chill, i dont have to worry about getting robbed
Posted: November 23, 2025I feel like overall, it's very safe, yes, especially at night, I've never felt particularly unsafe. You may get harassed by men on a rare occasion. Unfortunately, I believe that's a norm in every city around the world.

Hi! I’m a 22yo sociology student, leftist, cat mom and activist living in Ljubljana. I’m half-Slovene, half-Italian but my Italian isn’t perfect! I’d like to travel to explore Croatia, Italy and Austria, and possibly some other nearby countries, so if you want to travel there with a travel buddy, feel free to hit me up! 💌 I’m also open to discovering other interesting places in Slovenia! ✨ I’m open to meeting new people & hanging out, and I can show you around Ljubljana. I’m a very calm person who’s always happy to meet new people. I’m vegan taking the liberation pledge 🌱so I’d prefer to travel with other vegans or at least have trips where we both eat at vegan restaurants or have cruelty-free/vegan meals elsewhere🌱✌🏻🐽
