How safe is Lisbon?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Safe

Lisbon is generally a safe city, even at night. Like any other city, it has its areas of concern; however, the central and tourist areas are well lit and very active, making it safer to go around. Vigilance is still advised, particularly in less-traveled areas and the city's outskirts, just like in any other city worldwide. Nonetheless, instances of serious crime are relatively low. Hotels, restaurants, and bars are also usually open late into the night which can contribute to overall safety. Public transport services like trams, buses, and the metro also operate until late, providing safe transit options. It’s always helpful to plan your returns at night and be cautious of your surroundings to maintain your safety.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Safe

Public transportation in Lisbon including trams, buses, and metros, is generally safe and reliable. It is used frequently by both locals and tourists. However, during peak hours or in crowded conditions, be aware of pickpockets. Late at night, consider using taxis or rideshares for an extra level of safety.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Low

Lisbon is generally known for its friendly and respectful locals. Harassment on the streets is not common. However, like any other big city, it's always advised to remain vigilant and aware of your surroundings, especially while walking alone at night or in less crowded areas.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Low

Lisbon is generally a safe city for solo female travelers with a relatively low occurrence of petty crimes. Crimes such as pickpocketing and bag snatching are occasionally reported, primarily in crowded, tourist-filled areas and on public transportation. However, by being cautious, mindful of your belongings, and avoiding less populated areas at night, the risk of experiencing petty crime can be diminished significantly.

Group travel

Lisbon was the first travel group I did with my friends. It was a great experience! We rented a villa with a pool in Costa da Caparica, and I think it was the best decision since we were 6, and since the rental prices in the center of Lisbon are much higher. To go to the center and move around, we took some bolts, which divided by 6 was the cheapest and best option (It was most of the time around 1€ to 4€ per person depending on the length of the journey!) We mostly visited Lisbon in the center and in its surroundings but also Costa da Caparica and its beaches; Sintra, where we went to the Quinta da Regaleira; Almada... We ate some local food but also in small snack places since we wanted to sped money on activities more than food. If I could recommend a restaurant, it would be Casa do Alentejo, which is hidden in a small palace. We felt pretty safe everywhere since we were never alone, always together as a group or by pair. But at night in the center of Lisbon, they were some streets which didn't feel safe. We stayed in the most touristic streets, but sometimes, when we ended up in smaller streets, we were approached by men and asked if we wanted drugs. At first, it was surprising, but we ended up not caring since we were asked like a dozen times if we wanted some lmao. But mostly people are quite friendly and nice so we felt safe the whole trip. Overall, I think I spend almost 300€ for 8 days in a villa while not restricting myself on the budget and enjoying many activities. Lisbon is really worth it for a cheap trip !

We also went to sintra, accesible in train at 40 min, where there are at least 3 beautiful castles in different architectural styles sooo worth it !! im vegetarian so i didnt try traditional food with fish but pasteis de nata yes and it was such a succulent desert!

I don’t think I’ve fell in love with a city faster than falling in love with Lisbon and Portugal in general. I loved the city, the people, the views, the architecture… I was mostly walking alone and I remember feeling safe. There’s a lot to see and a lot to do.

Solo travel

I felt quite safe most of the time, although I came back home quite early (around 9 pm) every night. The city and attractions around it were fantastic, I advise to visit Sintra, a short train ride away.

Lisbon had been on my bucket list for approximately 14 years because so many people kept telling me that it was their favourite city they ever travelled to. And it really did not disappoint. It’s beautiful and historical and people were dancing and singing in the streets at night. Prices were really affordable and there was so much to explore. You could keep on walking and find a new cool location around every corner. Pastel de Nata for the win!

One of the most beautiful European cities in my opinion! A small gem 💎 So colorful You can travel and navigate Portugal solo easily! Had an amazing time! People seem so happy there. You can get lost safely and explore the streets of Lisbon. Each one of them has a unique surprise! So many beautiful cool hipster style places to eat and coffee shops to chill or even work! 100% recommended.

Family travel

Yes I felt safe, but that’s because I was with someone from my family. As a solo traveler I would recommend going with a group from a hostel or something. It isn’t dangerous, but if you travel alone at night it gets a little weird. There are lots of people who offer dr*gs or something else so be careful. There are a few famous streets, be careful there at night. Otherwise I felt great, even with one more person and I felt totally okay. Daytime is perfect I felt great all the time, just at night women should be a little bit more careful. Stay safe girlies <3

I felt super safe as a solo traveller. Lisbon is a charming city stepped in culture and arts, especially architecture. A wide range of food options from cheap to Michelin star. Many galleries and historic attractions to keep you occupied.

Solo travel

Lisbon was one of the safest cities among those I’ve traveled to. The only slightly unsettling part was the homeless people under the bridges at night, but that’s something you see in almost every European city. There weren’t any disturbing people in this city. During this solo trip, I stayed at Lost Inn Lisbon hostel, which is usually preferred by backpackers. It was incredibly clean, safe, and centrally located—a warm welcome, so to speak. I spent around 300-400 euros in a week, but I can confidently say that I tried all kinds of food and visited every place I wanted.

Solo travel

I didn't feel very safe in Lisbon, Portugal. Personally, nothing happened to me, but I heard about what happened to others, and because of those stories, I didn’t feel 100% secure. Accommodation is expensive, but transportation is cheap, and you can get anywhere by metro, as everything is well connected. It’s not too expensive, the prices are okay, but there are a lot of tourists all year round. Lisbon is a beautiful city with a lot to offer, and despite feeling uneasy at times, it's generally safe if you stay alert and follow common-sense precautions. Aside from the great public transportation, which is a bonus for getting around easily, you should definitely visit the following places: Belém – Here you can visit the Tower of Belém, Jerónimos Monastery, and the Monument to the Discoveries. Don’t forget to try the famous pastéis de nata (custard tarts), which are especially popular in Belém. Alfama – One of the oldest neighborhoods in Lisbon, with narrow streets and picturesque views. Also, be sure to visit São Jorge Castle, where you can enjoy a stunning panoramic view of the city. Baixa and Chiado – The central districts of Lisbon are full of shops, cafes, and restaurants. Baixa is great for shopping, and Chiado is known for its bookstores and galleries. Parque das Nações – A modern district with a beautiful park, an aquarium, and one of the most famous buildings, the Gare do Oriente (train station). Miradouros (viewpoints) – Lisbon has many spots offering spectacular views of the city and the Tagus River. Miradouro de Santa Catarina and Miradouro da Senhora do Monte are some of the most popular. LX Factory – This creative complex is located in an old industrial area, full of restaurants, bars, shops, and galleries. It’s a great place to relax and soak up the local atmosphere.

Lisbon doesn’t feel really safe to me. Cascais is more calm. Walking alone at night in Lisbon feels unsafe and I always want to be near light and group of SOBER people. On Fridays and weekends there are lot of drunk people. It makes non drinking people uncomfortable.

It depends on the place, Lisbon can be very beautiful but sometimes dangerous, if it's in the center of Lisbon, I'm not much of a night out person, but when I did go out, my experiences weren't all that bad, but sometimes there are people, especially men (as expected) who can be a bit aggressive, either because they're drunk or because they want trouble, or maybe both, nothing has ever happened to me directly.
