How safe is Lisbon?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Safe

Lisbon is generally a safe city, even at night. Like any other city, it has its areas of concern; however, the central and tourist areas are well lit and very active, making it safer to go around. Vigilance is still advised, particularly in less-traveled areas and the city's outskirts, just like in any other city worldwide. Nonetheless, instances of serious crime are relatively low. Hotels, restaurants, and bars are also usually open late into the night which can contribute to overall safety. Public transport services like trams, buses, and the metro also operate until late, providing safe transit options. It’s always helpful to plan your returns at night and be cautious of your surroundings to maintain your safety.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Safe

Public transportation in Lisbon including trams, buses, and metros, is generally safe and reliable. It is used frequently by both locals and tourists. However, during peak hours or in crowded conditions, be aware of pickpockets. Late at night, consider using taxis or rideshares for an extra level of safety.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Low

Lisbon is generally known for its friendly and respectful locals. Harassment on the streets is not common. However, like any other big city, it's always advised to remain vigilant and aware of your surroundings, especially while walking alone at night or in less crowded areas.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Low

Lisbon is generally a safe city for solo female travelers with a relatively low occurrence of petty crimes. Crimes such as pickpocketing and bag snatching are occasionally reported, primarily in crowded, tourist-filled areas and on public transportation. However, by being cautious, mindful of your belongings, and avoiding less populated areas at night, the risk of experiencing petty crime can be diminished significantly.

Solo travel

Lisbon was one of my favourite destination, felt very safe all the time, even alone at night as a female solo traveler. It is a really cheap destination with a lot of free things to do, there is always something new to see:)

Family travel

I went to Lisbon with my aunt in 2023. It was an amazing trip !! The city is absolutely stunning, the food is sooo good and people were really nice. We stayed at an Airbnb with the nicest couple ever, they had tons of great recommendations and were overall super welcoming. I didn't find it very expensive. It's definitely a trip I'd recommend and if you have the chnace to find a restaurant that offers a Fado concert go for it. It's a unique experience that gets you immersed in the beautiful culture

Group travel

Lisbon was the first travel group I did with my friends. It was a great experience! We rented a villa with a pool in Costa da Caparica, and I think it was the best decision since we were 6, and since the rental prices in the center of Lisbon are much higher. To go to the center and move around, we took some bolts, which divided by 6 was the cheapest and best option (It was most of the time around 1€ to 4€ per person depending on the length of the journey!) We mostly visited Lisbon in the center and in its surroundings but also Costa da Caparica and its beaches; Sintra, where we went to the Quinta da Regaleira; Almada... We ate some local food but also in small snack places since we wanted to sped money on activities more than food. If I could recommend a restaurant, it would be Casa do Alentejo, which is hidden in a small palace. We felt pretty safe everywhere since we were never alone, always together as a group or by pair. But at night in the center of Lisbon, they were some streets which didn't feel safe. We stayed in the most touristic streets, but sometimes, when we ended up in smaller streets, we were approached by men and asked if we wanted drugs. At first, it was surprising, but we ended up not caring since we were asked like a dozen times if we wanted some lmao. But mostly people are quite friendly and nice so we felt safe the whole trip. Overall, I think I spend almost 300€ for 8 days in a villa while not restricting myself on the budget and enjoying many activities. Lisbon is really worth it for a cheap trip !

lisbon was such a pretty city ! the monasteries were a bit expensive for our budget but we went to miradores, gave à walk in the old city which is really pretty with its little streets. We also went to sintra, accesible in train at 40 min, where there are at least 3 beautiful castles in different architectural styles sooo worth it !! im vegetarian so i didnt try traditional food with fish but pasteis de nata yes and it was such a succulent desert!

I don’t think I’ve fell in love with a city faster than falling in love with Lisbon and Portugal in general. I loved the city, the people, the views, the architecture… I was mostly walking alone and I remember feeling safe. There’s a lot to see and a lot to do.

Lisbon is very safe, but the amount of tourists there make it feel like you might be targeted. On the flip side, because there are always so many people, it generally feels quite secure. I wouldn’t wear lots of jewelry or headphones at night, walking alone, but other than that, you should be fine.

Lisbon? Oh, it’s like the cozy sweater of European capitals—warm, welcoming, and pretty darn safe. Strolling through its pastel-colored streets feels more like wandering through a postcard than a crime scene. Sure, keep an eye on your stuff (as applicable to anywhere in the world). Overall, Lisbon’s the kind of place where your biggest danger is falling in love with a custard tart—or five.
