Safety overview

Safety at night:Safe

Albufeira, generally experiences a peaceful atmosphere, even at night. While there are occasional reports of petty crime such as pickpocketing, the majority of areas, especially the tourist zones, are typically safe and regularly patrolled by police. It is always recommended, however, to avoid dimly lit or less populated parts at night for enhanced safety, and always be aware of your surroundings. Using a reputable taxi service at night is also a good safety measure.

Public transportation: Safe

Public transportation in Albufeira is generally safe and reliable. Buses and trains are the most common forms of transport and they are well-maintained. Many locals and tourists use them daily. Just remember to keep an eye on your belongings, as you would in any other city.

Street harassment: Low

Albufeira generally reflects a safe and secure environment for solo female travelers. Instances of street harassment are minimal. The locals are polite and respect personal space. However, as with any location, it is always advised to be cautious, especially during late hours or in less crowded areas. Overall, Albufeira proves to be relatively unproblematic in terms of street harassment.

Petty crimes:Low

Petty crimes such as pickpocketing and bag snatching exist in Albufeira, typically in crowded places and popular tourist spots. However, it is generally a safe destination if you stay alert and take necessary precautions. Don't flaunt valuables in public and always keep an eye on your belongings.

Tap water:Very safe

Albufeira has safe tap water that follows European Union sanitary standards. It is of a high quality, and can be consumed directly from the tap without worries of health risks. However, it may taste slightly chlorinated due to the sanitation process, but this does not affect the safety of the water. Bottled water is widely available if you prefer taste over tap water.

Solo travel experience

I stayed in Albufeira for several days, and it was a weird mix of retirees and then just thousands of super drunk, super rude, middle-aged non-Portuguese tourists. I was dismayed at the behavior of the tourists there, and locals told me that they don’t recommend Albufeira to anyone they know for this reason. I loved basically everywhere else I went in the Algarve but absolutely hated Albufeira.
