Safety overview

Safety at night:Safe

Zakopane is generally safe to walk alone at night. Like any location, it's always important to be aware of your surroundings, but Zakopane is a popular tourist spot and usually well-lit and populated, even in the later evening hours. Poland, in general, is known for its safety. However, always use your discretion, avoid deserted alleys or poorly lit areas, and stay in populated areas with people around. If you're uncomfortable, take a taxi or use a reliable ride service. Also, follow your intuition as it's your best safety guide.

Public transportation: Safe

Public transportation in Zakopane is generally reliable and safe. Buses and trams are widely used by locals and tourists alike with a low incidence rate of crime or harassment. However, like in any location, it's important to stay alert and watch your belongings at all times. Night services are less frequent but still considered safe. Bus stops and tram stations are well-lit and usually positioned in busy areas.

Street harassment: Low

Zakopane, as a popular tourist destination in Poland, generally offers a safe environment. Street harassment is relatively low compared to other places around the globe. However, like any place, occasional instances may occur especially in crowded areas or during peak tourist seasons. Being aware of your surroundings and taking standard safety precautions should provide a comfortable experience.

Petty crimes:Low

Zakopane is a generally safe town with a low record of petty crimes. Minor offenses like pickpocketing or bag snatching might happen, though they are rare, and usually occur in crowded areas or tourist hotspots. Always maintain vigilance, keep personal belongings secure, and avoid appearing overtly touristy to deter potential thieves.

Tap water:Very safe

Tap water in Zakopane is generally considered safe for consumption. The water quality is monitored regularly and meets EU standards for potable water. Nevertheless, if you have a sensitive stomach, you might want to buy bottled water instead.

Solo travel experience

Zakopane was my favorite city in Poland. I went in September so the weather was perfect for hiking. The people I met were so friendly and open and I felt very safe.

Solo travel experience

I was in Zakopane myself last summer, it’s a great place. However to everyone that’s yet to go, please do not take the horses up to Morskie Oko, if you can, walk it. These horses are being overworked. Things are better then they were few years ago, there’s more regulations and talk about it, however situation is still far from ideal.
