It was quite safe. I stayed in a hostel where they had mixed rooms- but during most of the stay they only had women in that room. I ventured into the mountains alone. Not sure about the people knowing english there - I used broken polish to communicate because I had the feeling no one would understand english. Keep in mind that big stores are closed on sundays so buy your food early!!
