Celendin is a beautiful ac very magical place. The city itself is small, the people there are super friendly and almost everybody is a musician, so you have music everywhere. There are some places, like a pizzeria close to plaza de armas, which was very good and not that expensive. In general is celendin pretty cheap, you get good street food very little money.

Consider the height if you go, it’s an easy and short walk but the height make it difficult, if you are not used to exercise or at least walking bear in mind because is going to take a toll on you but it is definitely worth it.

I spent in Peru September and October 2024. Till mid October I stayed in Cusco and the Apurímac region volunteering as a general practitioner. Then I travelled with two girlfriends. Easy to say you go from one place to another thinking "wow, this is one of the most spectacular places I've seen in my life". I've always felt safe, touristic spots are (too) well organised, might be difficult and more expensive to go up to the mountains without any agency. Sometimes I've travelled with colectivos and it was just fine. In the cities I used colectivos and not official taxi without problems.
Posted: August 20, 2025Experienced: September, 2024I went to Cusco, Peru on a service learning trip with a group of 10 from my college. Best experience! Felt completely safe walking through the city, very kind people. Last day there, my group’s flight was early but mine was later, so I solo travelled around the city and felt completely safe and enjoyed my walk around the city. Cusco is at 11,000 ft though, so make sure to bring motion or altitude sickness pills!! I thought I would be ok without them since I usually ski at high altitudes, but this is much more intense, bring the pills! Also, start with lighter meals then progress because their food is much more rich and flavorful, so beware of travelers diarrhea if you have a sensitive stomach (but definitely try Cuy aka guinea pig!)

A vibrant city always buzzing with activities and life. LOADS of activities which are pretty affordable, plenty of tours on get your guide, don't even need to be good at hiking because all the hikes have horses to take you most the way if you prefer. Tour guides are good, stayed pretty close to the centre most the time, but always felt super safe. AMAZING views within a couple hours drive of the city which when done with tours tends to include a couple of meals and transport etc. You need cash always, we pretty much had to withdraw daily to afford to pay our hostels, activities, food etc in cash, withdrawing 400 soles at once, shared between 2 of us. Not that we spend that much daily. But with combined costs, and souvenirs, it may as well have been. We spent a lot but we did a lot so no regrets. Definitely worth the visit.

Felt a bit abandoned and just overall unsafe. Not many people around, seemingly empty stores, very odd. Enjoyed my trip there overall just a tad worried when walking around outside the hostel. Cool city though.
Posted: November 3, 2025Well, when you're carrying a backpack, don't leave it literally on your back in crowded places because it can be opened. Or, don't hold your cell phone in your hand on open streets (it can be stolen). Don't go alone to dark places or uncrowded streets. Downtown and tourist-heavy areas like Miraflores, San Isidro, or Surco are safer. Although other places are also "safe", always take precautions, but if you don't have much to lose like valuables, there is no problem in going to flea markets, or walking around any city.

Lima is a safe place as long as you don’t go to sketchy places. Just be aware of your belongings and don’t walk showing what you have, you’ll be fine. I recommend using ride-hailing apps, and as women, not walking completely alone very late in the city or in less crowded areas. Do not accept alcohol from strangers.
Posted: September 1, 2025It is a big city with a lot of traffic. You can eat delicious food on every corner but always be careful with your belongings. You never know what might happen if you let your guard down; go out at night accompanied. If you walk alone, be careful.
