How safe is Tacna?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Moderate

While Tacna generally has a peaceful atmosphere, it's not typically advised to walk alone at night. This is especially true for solo female travelers. During the day, travel through the city is generally safe, and crime rates are lower compared to some other areas of Peru. But as with any place, it's important to stay alert and maintain common-sense practices, especially after dark. Always choose well-lit areas, avoid deserted streets, and use reliable transportation when possible. It's also recommended to stay in a well-reviewed accommodation, and ask local advice about areas to avoid for safety concerns.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Moderate

The public transportation system in Tacna is fairly reliable, offering both buses and taxis. During the day, these systems are generally safe to use with locals and tourists often utilizing them to get around the city. However, vigilance is necessary at all times, as incidents of pickpocketing can occur. At night, it's more advisable to use a reliable taxi service. While some female travelers have a comfortable experience, others report minor hassles. Language barrier may also be a challenge when using public transport.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Moderate

In Tacna, like in many places, women might experience occasional cat-calling or unsolicited attention in public areas. While most locals are very friendly and respectful, it is always important to stay aware of your surroundings. However, this should not significantly affect your travel experience if you maintain basic safety precautions such as ignoring unsolicited comments, dressing modestly, and staying in busy, well-lit areas. In any case, if you ever feel uncomfortable, don't hesitate to seek help from local police or other authorities.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Low

Petty crimes such as pickpocketing or purse snatching are not a significant concern in Tacna, especially in comparison to larger urban areas. However, like anywhere, it's important to remain aware of your surroundings and keep an eye on your belongings. Particularly busy areas can present an opportunity for opportunistic crime, but cases are relatively infrequent.

Family travel

Personally, I really like Tacna, because despite being a small city, it has a lot to offer, especially the food and beautiful places. Without a doubt, Peruvian cuisine is delicious. It's a good weekend plan.
