How safe is Maastricht?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Safe

Maastricht is generally quite safe at night, especially in well-lit and populated areas. The city has a low crime rate and the locals are usually friendly and willing to assist. While it is important to always be vigilant and aware of your surroundings, solo female travelers should feel comfortable walking alone at night. Like all cities, it has its share of petty crimes, so avoid poorly-lit areas and always keep your belongings secure.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Safe

Public transportation in Maastricht is generally reliable and safe, even at night. Bus lines cover most of the city and surrounding areas and they are frequently used by locals, students and tourists alike. However, like with any other place, it's always important to remain alert and aware of your surroundings, especially if you're traveling alone or during off-peak hours. Buses and trains are well-lit, regularly patrolled and most of them have CCTV cameras installed.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Very low

Maastricht is generally a safe city for female solo travelers. Street harassment is not a prevalent issue here. However, as with any travel situation, it's important to remain alert and aware of your surroundings at all times. Although you might come across some drunk individuals during late hours in bar areas, the majority of the locals are respectful and helpful.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Low

Maastricht, like most parts of the Netherlands, is generally a safe place for solo female travelers. Petty crimes such as pickpocketing or purse snatching do occur but are relatively rare, especially compared to many other European cities. However, caution should still be exercised particularly in crowded areas and while using public transportation.

Is Maastricht worth visiting?

Group travel

I went on a girls trip with three friends to Maastricht. One of my friends studies there so being with a local helped me feel safe in the city but the city is definitely safe without a local to help! It's a university city so there are students milling about at all hours of the day and night, so as three girls walking home from the bar at 2am, we did not feel nervous at all.

During the day, Maastricht feels very safe. In the city centre you're constantly surrounded by people and people will always try to help you whenever you ask them. The level of English of the average person is quite good. Most people know enough of the English language to be able to help you when you need it. During the day light, even in the back streets, Maastrichts feels quite safe. I wouldn't advise you to come there at night. It's not comfortable anymore. The city is crowded by students, day and night. At night, the city centre is still pretty crowded (especially on Thursdays) and feels safe. Public transport is good, but it has many delays. Luckily, most of the time, they are only a few minutes. If you have the chance, transport is best by bike in the city. However, remember to lock it properly (preferably also with an extra chain lock to a fixed object), since bikes get stolen quickly. Have a good stay in Maastricht! You'll love the small, charming town!

although it is a university city with lots of young people, it does get pretty empty and quiet, even in the city center after dark which might make it feel scary. not necessarily meaning it is unsafe however the emptiness isnt very comforting, especially if you are used to living in big cities
