Is Bonaire Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

Bonaire holds a low crime rate with the locals being friendly and considerate towards tourists. However, like any other tourist destination, petty crimes like pickpocketing can occur, so always keep your belongings close. There are plenty of well-lit, populated areas to explore but remember to stay vigilant and avoid deserted areas, especially after dark.

Safety at night:Safe

Bonaire is considered quite safe even for solo female travelers. The crime rate is relatively low and night-time security in populated areas is good. However, common sense must prevail - avoid less busy areas and always remain alert to your surroundings.

Public transportation:Safe

Public transportation in Bonaire is generally secure. There are shared taxis known as 'taxi buses' that operate on reliable schedules. However, there's no public bus system or train lines on the island. While it's considered safe, do keep an eye on your belongings, especially during crowded periods. As with any place in the world, it's always best to stay vigilant and aware of your surroundings.

Street harassment:Very low

Bonaire, being a part of the Netherlands, is highly known for safe streets and respectful citizens. The locals, known as Bonairians, are incredibly hospitable, friendly, and respectful. Street harassment is quite rare, and as a solo female traveler, you'll feel very safe walking around at any time of the day. However, always remember standard precautions and use common sense when it comes to your personal safety.

Petty crimes:Low

Bonaire overall is a safe tourist destination. The locals are generally friendly and respect tourists, but that doesn't mean petty crimes are non-existent. Occasionally, there can be reports of bag snatches, pickpocketing, and theft from parked cars, especially in crowded tourist spots. Still, the occurrence rate isn't alarmingly high. Basic vigilance and preventive measures like not leaving valuables visibly in the car or carrying excessive cash can help you avoid any potential makeshift opportunists.

Tap water:Safe

The tap water in Bonaire is generally safe to drink. It's produced directly from sea by a desalination plant and is of good quality. However, if you have a sensitive stomach, you might want to consider bottled water to prevent any potential stomach issues.

Family travel experience

I went here for my 50th birthday and my Moms 80th. We had a blast. Moderately expensive but worth every dime in my opinion. Amazing snorkeling. Laid back small island. I felt safe the whole time. All the food there tastes better. Rent a truck and explore the island. Go for the snorkeling in my opinion. If you do, I can connect you with an amazing female snorkel tour guide.
