Pau is a safe city. The city center is really safe for solo travelling. Like anywhere else, be careful at night especially in the Saragosse neighbourhood. The touristic area (castle, palais Beaumont) are safe. For public transport the F bus is a great option. Bare in mind that the buses stop at night.

Fine area to walk around in during the day in the center and outskirts, but still need to be aware of your surroundings when you leave the center. At night you do need to be careful, I keep pepper spray on me just to be safe, best to walk home with people not alone if you don’t know the city.

Pau is pretty safe, there are a lot of students there for all over the world. There are good restaurants and gastronomy, few good museum, I've beautiful you of the Pyrenees mountains. Not far from the city there are hiking spots and beautiful lakes.
