I’d say Le Mans is pretty safe. You have the occasional misplaced stare, but during the day I’ve never heard of anything happening. At night, it’s better to be careful but I’d probably say that about France in general

Le Mans is a city with its flaws as well as its strengths. As in all cities, there are areas to avoid at night, such as the old town. During the day the streets are safe and fairly well protected. Overall, the city is quite safe if you avoid the risky areas.

However: Men sometimes whistle at me, alcoholic or drug-addicted men come up to me from time to time when I'm waiting for the bus in the evening, and once a man followed me down the street at night. But I've always got away with it by walking away, ignoring their remarks, or by getting closer to groups of people. In the middle of the day, even on my own, I'm fine.
