Clermont Ferrand is a very student-oriented city, so it's generally safe at night and completely during the day. There are lots of bars and places for young people to go out; the streets in the center are rarely empty. Just be careful when going to certain neighborhoods, especially at night, but that's the same everywhere.

In general, during the day it is quite safe, but at night you have to be careful in the areas near the train station; especially Charras street because it has a reputation for being a drug exchange site.

On the west side of the city I feel like there’s more safety. On the east side I usually meet more sketchy people and also is more close to the train station which is not a good neighbourhood. There are a lot of people in this city asking money from you, but most of them are very polite. Rue Charras is an unsafe street in my opinion.
