I try not to wander alone at night everywhere I travel. In Caen the port is not a safe place to walk alone at night (or so I've been told), I try not to go there as much as possible. Otherwise, the city is very lively at night and I feel quite safe taking the bus alone.

I would describe Caen as a pretty safe city, from my experience, I feel very safe during the day, a bit less when it's nighttime especially around the train station but the city center feels safe to me even after dark. You can meet some drunk people in the public transport when it's the end of the day, or some annoying men that want to talk to you and "be your friend" but other than that it's fine.

Caen is the capital of Normandy, in all cities like these some kind of threats are to be expected but not as much as in other cities, if you know where not to go you’re going to be OK. There could be people approaching you but most of the time when you say that you’re not interested they will leave you alone, if they don’t, just walk very quickly to other parts of the city that are a bit safer. Avoid places like the city train center and the docks at night.
