St. John's was a beautiful little city surrounded by natural beauty. Signal hill is right next to downtown and has lovely hiking trails where you can see whales from shore. Newfoundland has a unique culture and the friendliest people.

St. John’s is a relatively safe city if you use common sense. Most violent crimes are related to participating in other criminal activities. When visiting use the same common sense that you would in any other city and you should be completely fine!
Posted: December 4, 2025St. John’s is a small city and I would consider it safe for female travellers. NL is known for its hospitality and kindness. Crime has been rising in the past few years but I would not be concerned to travel here alone, or to walk around the city alone.

St. John’s is a generally safe city. People are generally friendly and welcoming. Walking around is quite safe, just stick to the basics and avoid dark, secluded areas at night, particularly in the downtown area. Petty crime is quite low here.
