Nis is a city where you can leave your phone in your pocket and not worry about being pickpocketed. You should be careful late at night, especially on weekends since there is a chance that there will be drunk people roaming the street, especially around the waterfront. It is generally safe, but you should always be aware of your surroundings.
Posted: July 29, 2025I feel like Niš is an overall safe city if you know where you're going and avoid darker parts of the city in the night. Stay away from drunk people or men on gas stations and you'll be fine. Everyone else is pretty much okay.
Posted: July 29, 2025Belgrade is usually a good town of you are worried about safety and behavior of people who live in the Belgrade. If you need any help to find a place to go, 90% of citizens at the street will gladly help you with that. Also, we have i would said a lot of tourists for not that popular European country. :)

It's pretty much safe - I live around center, never had any problems and I'm not scared to walk back home at 3pm, 3am, 7am :) Streets are calm, even if somebody passes they are probably just walking home as well

Generally speaking it's a pretty safe city. Couple of things I'd watch out for pickpocketers in buses and busy bus stops. I wouldn't be that comfortable walking alone late at night. If you need some sort of help in the city feel free to reach out to a stranger, usually people are kind and willing to help.

for me, Belgrade is the safest place to live among relatively big cities. I have lived here for two years and I have never had any unpleasant situations worth paying attention to. my friends have too. the only thing to be wary of here in my opinion: your wallet can be snatched from your bag, but no one will ever snatch your bag from your hands

I felt safe walking even at night as a woman. There were many young women who were around my age, on a walk with their friends, pets etc at night and at parks. The cuisine is usually a mix of Ottoman and Italian, not very diverse as a Turkish person. The people were usually kind! My wallet got stolen at Trg Slavija Mc Donald’s tho, I don’t recommend wearing backpacks. The city is small, walkable distance.

I can't recommend Belgrade enough! While to some Europeans, the city might feel shabby due to it's poor maintenance (corruption is bad here), yet, it was the safest city I ever visited. It has a lot to offer in terms of sightseeing and gastronomical tourism. Also, the prices are insanely low and perfect for budget travellers 😇
