Safety index

Safety at night:Moderate

Nights in Serbia can be quite safe, particularly in major cities like Belgrade where the areas are generally well-lit and pedestrian-friendly. That said, as with any city around the world, it's still advisable to be cautious. Some neighborhoods can be less safe than others, and petty crimes like pickpocketing can still occur. It's best to stick to populated areas, avoid dark, isolated spots, and always be aware of your surroundings. Public transport can be relied upon during late hours, but taking a trusted taxi service might be more secure. So, you can have an enjoyable time during the night in Serbia but remember to practice general safety measures.

Public transportation:Safe

Public transportation in the Republic of Serbia is generally safe and reliable. The coaches, buses, and trams are relatively well-maintained and run on schedule. Instances of pickpocketing or harassment might happen occasionally, particularly in crowded places or busy hours, but they are not the norms. Overall, you can count on the public transport systems for safer movement, but, as always, staying alert and mindful of your surroundings is key.

Street harassment:Low

Serbia is a relatively safe country for solo female travelers. Street harassment, although present like in any other place, is not considered extremely common or pervasive. The common forms can be in form of stares, occasional comments or unsolicited attention and do not usually escalate to anything physical. Exercise common safety measures like you would in your home country for comfort and security.

Petty crimes:Low

Serbia is generally a safe country for travelers and petty crimes such as pickpocketing and bag snatching are not rampant. However, like anywhere else, it is advisable to keep your belongings secure and be aware of your surroundings, particularly in crowded and tourist popular areas.

Tap water:Safe

Tap water in the Republic of Serbia is generally considered safe for drinking. Most cities and towns have high-quality water treatment facilities, and the overall standards for water quality are high. However, quality can vary in rural or isolated areas, and it's advised to use bottled water or a water purification treatment as a precaution. Always use your discretion and seek local advice.

Solo travel experience

I didn't enjoy my trip to Serbia, because people smoke cigarettes everywhere, even in restaurants and cafes. Because of this, while eating, I was forced to inhale smoke from other smokers.
