Is Portugal safe for women?

Porto

Overall, it is a pretty calm city. Of course, as a girl, we need to be careful but, in general, it is a safe city. I was never robbed or had any trouble walking around. The only thing that is more common in Porto are verbal harassment but not so much in the tourist city center.

Lisbon

Pretty safe to walk around during the day. At night it quite depends on the location (like going out where there are a lot of discos and drunk people is not the best idea). There is also pickpockets, they won’t harm you, just be aware of your belongings. Nothing ever happened to me or anyone one I know here

Faro

Like most women, I have heard inappropriate comments and harassment towards me both during the day and night time. I have heard stories of being mugged and have lived through one where we (group of 4) were mugged by 2 guys at around 3am in the downtown area. The vibe of the city has changed in the past few years and I don’t feel as safe as before. Faro is the only city with university in Algarve so the bars are just full with college students. Depends on your vibe and what you’re looking for. The bar street can be problematic in terms of violence. I have heard an increase of stalking in the bars area.

Lisbon

It’s pretty safe don’t feel any disturbed thoughts. In overall it’s pretty nice in here only to much garbage around places. Mostly it’s nice weather and you will feel comfortable. Just don’t forget to get some worm clothes

Lisbon

lisbon is pretty safe, during the day the most common thing would probably be pickpockets as in most touristsy cities but during the night in certain areas it can be a little sketchy specially if you are alone or just girls

Aveiro

The city of Aveiro is super calm and peaceful! It's called the Portuguese Venice due to the existing canals. There's no crime at all, and even at night, it's super safe. It has a good climate and good food! The existing public transportation is good.

Aveiro

Extremely safe city for solo female travelers and travels in general. Laid back but very helpful people that would step in should there be a need for it and will provide general info. Very low crime rate.

Lisbon

Lisbon is a very safe place to stay. Pratically no problem at any time of the day. The only danger is with petty offenses like pickpocketing. Is a tourist destination so I recommend keeping a close eye on your belongings.

Braga

It used to be safer in the past. Walking alone at night is not advisable if outside the city center or in low-lit areas. Usually women do not walk alone at night, so this might also help explain my feedback. I don’t believe anything serious would happen, but I wouldn’t feel safe going out at night alone for example

Portugal, Solo travel

Last year, I was in Portugal (Porto, Lisbon) and I highly recommend it. I chose this destination based on a recommendation for solo travel in terms of safety, and I wasn't disappointed. The cities are very well connected, and it's easy to meet new people.

Lisbon, Solo travel

I volunteered in a hostel in Lisbon in early September. The weather was lovely and warm, so I regularly went to nearby beaches. I met friendly people at my hostel and in clubs or cafés, who I later hung out with. Also, the walking tour I took was a great way to meet new people, see historic sites, and learn the local hotspots.
