Kolkata is fairly safe overall, other than extremely shady places of courses. Has there been crime and assault cases? yes. But they're unfortunately everywhere, so keeping that in mind, Kolkata isn't too bad. People are mostly friendly and happy to help with food, directions, travel. Also compared to other cities, Kolkata doesn't have that much of a night life and a lot of areas are gonna be fairly empty by 11pm, which might be scary. Local transport is very cheap here and safe enough.
Posted: April 14, 2025It is safe for groups. After the rgkar incident one cannot feel completely safe but the people of Kolkata try their best to help strangers, make everyone feel at home. And there are police and other help available. Only worries: political party feuds, unemployed people, eveteasers (rare) . Good people are more than the bad people here. Horrific crimes rarely happen, if ever. It's a beautiful city.

Kolkata is safe City and land of artists. It is a warm cusp between the modern and the ancient worlds. Women here can wear anything they want and feel safe, despite the recent Kolkata rape case I have been living in this city for 2+ years and I have always felt safe.
Posted: February 1, 2025Very safe and liberal city. Folks here are friendly and helpful. Safe to move around alone in public transport and late nights are not worry some. Lots of fun places to visit in the day and eat out at. Night life and shopping is also nice here.
Posted: January 26, 2025It is pretty safe. Kolkata is mostly very nice and modern and does not include much sexual harrassment cases except certain public transportation like buses and packed metros. Otherwise it is pretty safe, you will never feel scared to walk back home at night. Most of the people are very sweet and always willing to help you out on the roads.
Posted: January 25, 2025I have never personally felt unsafe in my part of town, but I am aware of other parts of town that locals consider to be unsafe. In general, I do not go out alone or take an Uber by myself after dark.

I would recommend to go to Kolkata 100%. It's one of the safest place where you can go and enjoy yourself at fullest. I recommend to go to different places cuz the list is never ending. It may be little costly but it's all worth it.
Posted: January 30, 2025Kolkata was definitely the worst place I have been in my life. Accommodation is much more expensive if you want to find something fairly decent, and I had trouble finding good places to eat compared to the rest of India.
