How safe is India for women?

Renu

Manali

It's pretty safe for women and you don't feel hassled with anything. If you even find one or two odd people they won't be local and would be tourists whenever I have come across anything. People are generally helpful.

India

India can be very unsafe with all honesty, it also hugely depends on which city you're traveling, I would not discourage anyone, I have extensively travelled , but since I'm from India my levels of tolerance can be different, although what I would highly recommend is to travel with someone who is from India, try to get a woman companion who's also from India, it can do a lot of difference in everything. I mean it's still risky, but you can fairly avoid so many pitfalls.

Mumbai

Mumbai is city which never sleeps and that makes it much safer to travel even at night. The public transport runs till late in the night but it’s better to be cautious while using the trains at night.

Gurugram

Gurugram is generally considered safe, especially in its well-secured residential and commercial areas. The city has a strong police presence and modern infrastructure, though, as with any urban area, it’s wise to stay aware of your surroundings.

Chennai

Chennai is quite a close minded city. The public transport is often crowded, Uber and autos are relatively affordable. However buses are free for women, and the metro is quite safe. There is always staff at the metro stations. There isn't a bustling nightlife and I'd recommend not staying out after 22.00 pm for safety reasons, unless you're with a friend.

Bangalore

Bangalore is safe but needs caution. I have personally travelled alone in cabs several times even very late at night with no issues, but we still do hear news about assault and rape. I would not suggest being alone after dark if the area is not known

Chennai

Though Chennai is fairly safe compared to other parts of India. Since the city has almost negligible light life , it's better to avoid travelling at night. Most people understand English here unlike other parts of Jndia

Ghaziabad

I'm at Indirapuram and that's quite a safe neighbourhood. There are mostly working professionals in the age group of 25-50 living in this area. I travel and walk alone too and go for late night movies and outings as well

Is India safe to travel?

India, Solo travel

Amazing experience. Spent most of the time between rishikesh and daramshala. I felt very safe as a solo woman traveller. Remember to respect the Culture, dressing up covering the legs and shoulders, even when you go in the water. People are very kind and welcoming. You feel the spirity in these 2 destionations. India is huge and might be different in other parts. So be aware.

India, Solo travel

I felt overall safe in India, with a few exceptions. India is very crowded, so I even felt safe during night hours, but I would avoid dark alleys and places just crowded with men. I know you should cover shoulders and knees as they’re considered sexual in India, but I didn’t do that as I really don’t believe joints are somewhat arousing.

Is India worth visiting?

Overall rating

4.3 /5

based on 41 experiences

Chikmagalur, Solo travel

Chikmagalur is a hill station nestled in the Western Ghats of Karnataka, famed for its breathtaking scenery, coffee plantations, and laid-back atmosphere. Here's a quick review to help you decide if it's your ideal getaway: Pros: * Lush greenery and scenic beauty * Coffee estates and fresh coffee experiences * Hiking and trekking trails * Waterfalls and cascading hills * Pleasant weather year-round Cons: * Limited nightlife and entertainment options * Can get crowded during peak season * Some roads can be narrow and winding Overall, Chikmagalur is a perfect destination for nature lovers, adventure seekers, and those seeking a tranquil escape. If you're looking for a bustling city experience, this might not be the ideal destination.

Munnar, Family travel

Munnar is a great hill station, lush green and non commercial, authentic good, pure air. Beware of the spice gardens and the products they try to sell on account of authentic stuff. It's way too costly and not sure if it's authentic or not. Food might be average at hotels but good on the street. Overall people are good but stay away from people trying to get business out of travellers as usual.
