Athens is not safe for solo travellers. Especially the Athens center. If you want to visit Athens, choose to live in the north like Kifisia or Marousi where you can easily take the green metro line and visit the center of the Athens during the day and not the night hours.
Posted: September 8, 2024In athens you need to keep an eye on your belongings at all times and also especially if you are a tourist look like you know where you are going. It will be safe if you do those things. Also dont just aimlessly wander in the center because there are pretty bad areas outside the touristic zone and actually very close to it. Just be aware and you will be fine.
Posted: September 7, 2024There are certain areas in the centre of Athens, that I wouldn’t walk alone. Take public transportation or a taxi if its very late at night. If possible book your accommodation more central areas.Overall you will feel safe.
Posted: August 15, 2024In general I consider the capital cities one of the safest in Europe. At least the dodgy areas are a few and we can avoid them. The tourist areas are filled with pickpockets. Verbal sexual harassment in the streets especially at night. Physical sexual harassment in the subway in the centre and pickpockets. Not very tolerant towards LGBTQ+ people although things are getting better.

I live in Athens 1 year because I'm studying there.I could say you have to know where you will go to be sure you are safe day and night. In the center always be sure you have your backpack safe because most of the times the roads are crowded. In conclusion, I could say it's safe but you have to be carefull as you would in every town.
Posted: July 27, 2024Athens is overall a safe city but you have to be careful either way. Although, i have been sexually harassed/catcalled etc numerous times.
Posted: July 11, 2024There are areas I wouldn’t walk alone at night such as Omonoia, Menidi, Pedio Areos, Kamatero. Please be cautious about pickpockets and people trying to scam but don’t freak out. Athens is a place with lots of tourists so be aware
Posted: July 9, 2024I would say that it is a fairly safe city for tourists, if you avoid staying in places like Omonoia. I wouldn't recommend staying out late alone (from 12 to 4 am) because it is a big city with high criminality. The main thing you need to worry about as a tourist is pick pockets.
Posted: June 28, 2024In Athens, various incidents of sexual assaults/ harassment have been reported during the past years. Some areas are more dangerous than others (Omonia Square, Victoria Square, Stathmos Larisis, Agios Panteleimonas Square). Some incidents have also been reported in areas that are very popular amongst travellers (Exarchia, Kypseli). The following map shows all the incidents of sexual harassment and rape in Greece and it can be of great assistance. https://sexharassmap.espivblogs.net/map/ Bring robbed is not improbable in Athens, but if you pay attention to your personal belongings and take the necessary precautions, you should be fine.

It really depends on the area. On the contrary with other countries the city center is not the safest as it's the cheapest part of Athens. But other areas are pretty safe. I think the most far away you are from the center the safest it is. Please avoid Omonoia.

Walk up and down as many streets as possible in Plaka. Enjoy the many cafes and eateries. Take in the sights. And smile at the friendly locals and fellow travellers. Have a wonderful time in this beautiful and historical city!
Posted: September 16, 2024I live in Athens now and have been for the last months. I visited the acropolis and it was so nice. It was free entry bc I’m 22 which was really good. The people are nice and the food are great. They have a lot of different rooftop bars also around monastiraki. I would recommend MS rooftop, hyper, A for Athens and 360 rooftop bar.

I'm dying to explore new countries and learn about cultures. My favorite is mountain climbing next to waterfalls and swimming in the sea at sunset :)) My goal is to see the northern lights up close🤪
