Overall, the town is small and safe to walk around. It’s quite friendly towards tourists. However local men can get aggressive in some more rural areas in the district of chania. In addition, driving can get quite dangerous, since most local drivers do not respect the law and drunken driving is common.

Chania is a small quiet city. The crime lever is low. There are only a few sexual harassment reports (don't get panic if Greek men shout at you it's just compliments, definitely not in a nice way but they are not dangerous, just don't pay attention). Be careful about pick pockets especially in crowded beaches.

I felt very safe in Crete and chania, however keep in mind it is very very touristy. If you go to Crete I would definitely rent a car, otherwise you have to pay around 60 euros to go to each of the places you will want to visit. We paid 120 euros to rent a car for 3 days, I would say it was worth it if you can share this price with others! In Crete I really would not recommend the cities if you don’t feel like being in croweded overtouristy places, the tourism also makes the costs quite expensive- around 15 euros for a meal anywhere on the island. Definitely go to baloos lagoon and do a boat tour one day, this was an amazing nature experience. Also visit seitan Limani if you like hiking, but keep in mind it’s very crowded!! However very worth it! Elafonisi beach which is very popular is crowded but pretty, don’t expect pink sand though!

Hello! Although I am new to this app, I love hosting people and meeting faces from around the world. I currently live in the beautiful island of Crete, but I am originally from the north of Greece (Thessaloniki). I live with my partner, a dog and a cat. I currently work in public education as a psychologist and I am doing a masters degree in critical pedagogy. I also keep myself busy with lots of activities, like collective projects, political action, nature exploration, music, movement and more.
