Is Spain safe for solo female travellers?

Spain is generally safe for solo female travellers. The country is known for its friendly locals and vibrant culture, and the crime rate is relatively low. Women should take the same precautions as they would in any other country, such as avoiding walking alone at night and being aware of their surroundings. Additionally, it is recommended to dress modestly and to be aware of pickpockets in crowded areas.

Solo travel experience

I traveled alone for the first time to Spain (Malaga, Granada, and Madrid). I don’t speak any Spanish but found that most people spoke English. Having Google Translate with offline translation for Spanish was nice, but I rarely felt even that was necessary. As for safety, I felt that Spain was very safe. I never felt unsafe during my travels. Trains and buses in Spain are really nice. For Madrid, I stayed near Plaza Mayor and felt that the location was perfect. I opted to stay in a hostel as I find them to be more social for solo travelers.

Solo travel experience

I did my first solo trip last October to Spain. I did Madrid, Barcelona and Mallorca. Almost everyone spoke English and I felt super safe the whole time I was there for 10 days. I walked around Madrid alone at 1 a.m. eating gelato and seriously felt safer there doing that alone than I ever would in downtown Chicago where I live, which is saying something. I did planes, trains, and taxis/Uber for traveling. It was a wonderful experience.

Solo travel experience

I took my first solo trip to Andalucia, Spain. I stayed there for 10 days: 3 days in Sevilla, 1 day in Cordoba, 3 days in Granada, and 3 days in Malaga. I felt safe the whole time and there was always something interesting to do, so I never felt lonely or bored.

Safety tips for solo female travellers in Spain

Spain can be a safe destination for solo female travelers, but it's important to take some precautions to ensure your safety. Here are some safety tips for solo female travelers in Spain:

  1. Always be aware of your surroundings and trust your instincts. Be aware of people who may be following you or who may be trying to take advantage of you.

  2. Avoid walking alone in dark alleys or deserted streets. Stick to well-lit areas and populated areas.

  3. Don’t carry too much cash with you. Use a credit card or debit card instead.

  4. Don’t wear flashy jewelry or expensive clothing that may draw attention to you.

  5. Don’t accept drinks from strangers as they may be spiked with drugs.

  6. Don’t leave your drink unattended as it may be spiked with drugs.

  7. Don’t hitchhike as it can be dangerous.

  8. Avoid walking alone at night. If you must, stick to well-lit areas and populated areas.

  9. Let someone know where you are going and when you expect to return.

  10. Carry a whistle with you in case of an emergency.

About Me

Hi, I'm Lía! I'm a '96 baby, born and raised in Galicia, Spain. I'm an English teacher, but I'm also a student! I have an MA in Advanced English Studies and I'm currently pursuing a PhD in Feminist Studies. I love travelling and I've actually lived in the UK for half a year as part of my Erasmus exchange. I also love sports; I practised taekwondo for more than 15 years and achieved international recognition in my field, I also enjoy watching tennis matches and MotoGP. I'm into crossfit, diving, and hiking, but I also love doing nothing! I'm a vegetarian but not very picky and since I looove cooking I don't mind preparing a non-vegetarian dish for when my friends come over. I'm very energetic and I'm always down to whatever plans, some may even say I'm fun to be with! I try to be flexible but the truth is I get very nervous when things don't go as planned or when something is out of my control, but I'm working on that and, since I'm a solo-traveller newbie I'm more open-minded about going with the flow. I'm really looking forward to meeting new people and making new friends!
